Tarvinder Singh, Senior Partner of Kochhar & Co on Amitabh Bachchan's personality rights order of Delhi High Court

Bachchan approached the High Court seeking an omnibus order protecting his name, image, voice or any of his characteristics without his consent.

Bar & Bench

The Delhi High Court on Friday passed an interim order restraining persons at large from infringing the personality and publicity rights of veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan.

Tarvinder Singh, Senior Partner of Kochhar & Co quoted

”This is an important and timely judgement and a much needed one in today's digital world for protecting Personality Rights of an individual which are also referred to as Right to Publicity. Such rights are generally considered to be Property Rights which may even survive the death of the individual concerned. The readers may recall the events after the completion of Tokyo Olympics in 2021 when the Personality Rights of medal winners Neeraj Chopra and P.V Sindhu were infringed with impunity leading to the issuance of legal notices by Chopra and Sindhu. It was high time that the law relating to Personality Rights was laid down clearly by the court"

The judge also noted that Bachchan is likely to suffer irreparable loss and harm, and that some of the activities may even bring him disrepute, if the order is not passed.
