The Criminal Justice and Police Accountability (CPA) Project, Detention Solidarity, & Centre for Justice, Law and Society (CJLS) at JGLS, is hosting the second webinar in the four part webinar series titled 'Towards an Anti-Carceral Politics: Rethinking Crime and Punishment in India'.
This series will explore several key themes and issues concerning criminality and carceral politics in India at the nexus of caste, gender, class, and other political concerns.

The Criminal Justice and Police is a Bhopal based litigation, research and capacity building intervention. We combine strategic and empirical research to hold justice system accountable for imposing casteist and colonial modes social control on Denotified Tribal and other marginalised communities.

Detention Solidarity Network (DetSolNet) is an online space to critically engage with the structures and experiences of detention that constitute the carceral state in India.
About Centre for Justice, Law, and Society (CJLS)
The Centre for Justice, Law, and Society (CJLS) is a multidisciplinary research centre at Jindal Global Law School that critically engages with contemporary issues at the intersection of law, justice, society and marginalization in South Asia.
The CPA Project in collaboration with CJLS & Detention Solidarity will be hosting a webinar on Caste as Criminality. It will be held on 20th November, 2021, from 5 P.M to 6:30 P.M IST.
Through this panel, the conversations will seek to address how the establishment and evolution of the criminal justice system in India institutionalized caste prejudices, and in particular, how this has impacted Vimukta and Trans communities.
The speakers for this panel include:
Sai Bourothu is a Bahujan transwoman and criminology researcher, who works on accountable policing and incarceration systems in commonwealth countries. She is passionate about issues of access to justice, gender freedoms, and rights. Creating and holding space for conversations and solidarities is something she is keen on. She is associated presently with the Queer Incarceration Project, a collective of trans* and Queer persons in conflict with law, as the network coordinator. Further, she works as a researcher with the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which seeks a pre-emptive ban on fully autonomous/ automated weapon systems.
Shweta Goswami has engaged in numerous community-level projects over the years and has explored the philosophy of inter-personal violence and its relation to caste at length. With a heart and mind committed to addressing Sexual Violence in the most organic manner, she founded Nirmal Initiative, and continues to nurture it with immense love and care.
M. Subba Rao is the Convener of DNT Political Front (DPF) that works across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to mobilise state-level forums facilitating DNT movements. With three decades of experience as a grassroots organizer in the development sector, he has carried out participatory research and collective action, organised DNT workshops at the state and national levels, trained various State and non-State functionaries, and engaged with international organisations like the UN. As the managing director of Mulnivasi Livelihoods Research and Revival Council, his work with people in traditional livelihoods affected by demonetisation and lockdowns aims to revive such livelihoods through grassroots action.
