The Virtual Law School has been founded by Dr. Nachiketa Mittal, former Faculty of NLU Odisha and former Dean of Unitedworld School of Law, Karnavati University.
The VLS is an online law teaching platform for all the law students of the country who are not able to make it to the best law schools.
VLS is organising a talk by Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG on the topic- "COVID-19, Virtual Hearing and Automated Decision Making" on October 4, Sunday at 11:00 AM (IST) and 03:30 PM (Australian EST).
This talk is part of Global Legal Approaches & Development Talk (GLAD Talk) being organised by VLS. Previous, GTALK Speakers include- Sr. Adv. Kapil Sibal, Sr. Adv. Salman Khurshid, Sr. Adv. Dr. Abhishek Singhvi, Sr. Adv. Yatindra Singh (Former Chief Justice of High Court of Chhattisgarh) and Prof. (Dr.) Shanthakumar, Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat National Law University.
About Hon’ble Mr. Kirby’s GLAD TALK: In this GLAD Talk, the speaker will explain the impact of COVID-19 on legal practice, especially in Australia. Courts in every jurisdiction have adjusted their procedures to permit many legal proceedings by video links. These procedures will be explained.
They have parallels in India and around the world. Professor Richard Susskind OBE (Oxford University) has suggested that the rapid adaptation by lawyers in common law countries to virtual hearings will leave a long-term impact on legal practice. It may result in automated decision-making, a proposal being experimented in China.
Can using algorithms be used to adapt court process? Or would this undermine individualised human justice that is a feature of our legal system. The speaker will explore the needs and prospects of radical change.
