The 2017 batch of NUJS Kolkata has recorded 100% placements. Out of a batch of 128, all 78 students who sat for placements have landed jobs in law firms and in-house teams.
A whopping 53 students were picked up by the Big 7 law firms, with Khaitan making the most hires (11). Luthra & Luthra made 9 hires, followed by Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas with 8 and Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas with 7. Trilegal also made 7 hires, followed by AZB & Partners with a total of 6 and J Sagar Associates with 5.
Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, IndusLaw, Anand & Anand and Link Legal were the other law firms that hired.
3 students also received training contracts with international firms; one each at Linklaters, Herbert Smith Freehills and Allen & Overy.
According to the press release, a majority of students were placed on last year’s Day Zero, when law firms picked up 57 students (inclusive of pre-placement offers).

For the international firms, the salaries ranged from Rs. 38-44 lakh, while for the domestic firm, the annual pay ranged from Rs. 8-18 lakh. The highest package was offered by AZB Mumbai.
More than six students have decided to pursue higher studies and have secured admission at universities like Harvard, Cambridge, NYU Faculty of Law, London School of Economics and Graduate Institute, Geneva. One student – Gauri Pillai – also landed the prestigious Rhodes scholarship.
One student took up a role at Centre for Internet and Society, while others will pursue the Young India Fellowship program at Ashoka University.
The Campus Recruitment Committee (CRC) also claims that the NUJS secured the highest number of law firm placements among all law schools. The release states,
“…NUJS beats all market trends to secure the highest number of job offers among premier law schools. The Class of 2017 also marginally trumps the record of the Class of 2016 in terms of of total number of ‘Big 7’ jobs…”
The class of 2015 had also recorded 100% placements.
The 2017 CRC comprises faculty advisor Vaneeta Patnaik, and student members Abhimanyu Hazari, Aman Bansal, Trisha Dasgupta (Coordinator), Aishwarya Mudgil, Satwik Singh and Apoorv Agarwal (Coordinator).
