Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai cordially invites you to the second Prof. C. H. Alexandrowicz Memorial Lecture on ‘C.H. Alexandrowicz, India, and the Excavation of International Law’ by Dr. Carl Landauer on 26 October 2021.

About the Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai (MNLU)

Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai is one of the premier National Law Universities in India. MNLU Mumbai was established in Maharashtra to impart advanced legal education and promote society-oriented research in legal studies for the advancement of the societal life of the people in the country.

Prof. Alexandrowicz has played a phenomenal role in the development of international law in India. In 1951 Prof. Alexandrowicz was appointed Professor of International and Constitutional Law at the University of Madras. He explored the history of international law in Asia and established the Indian Yearbook of International Affairs.

As argued by David Armitage and Jennifer Pitts in their book The Law of Nations in Global History, “Alexandrowicz contributed to the effort of promoting the idea of international rule of law by rejecting a Eurocentric history and theory of international law.”

There is a need to bring his scholarship to the front as an alternative to Eurocentrism in the History of International Law. This Memorial Lecture is a tribute to the legal luminary. The first lecture shall be delivered by Dr. Carl Landauer, international lawyer based in California, USA. Dr. Carl is an alumnus of Harvard Law School, Yale University and Stanford University.

He previously taught history at Yale, Stanford, and McGill Universities, and international legal theory at the University of California Berkeley School of Law. The other speakers of the event are Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Ukey, Vice Chancellor, MNLU Mumbai, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute and Prof. (Dr.) B. Venugopal, Professor and Head, Department of Legal Studies, University of Madras.
