Bar & Bench

Since late last year, we have built a network of Campus Ambassadors across more than fifty law schools all over India. These law students have been providing us with information on campus events and activities, and also sharing legal articles.

This series of interviews is meant to turn the spotlight on these hardworking and dedicated individuals.

In this edition, we speak with Vivan Jhaveri, a fourth-year law student at United World School of Law, Gandhinagar.

Why did you choose to study law? Did you have any other interests before deciding to pursue law school?

As a first-generation lawyer, choosing law was a very tough decision for me since I had no prior background in law. My interest towards law and more importantly real-estate laws started growing after my family was wrongfully dispossessed from a trust property occupied by us as tenants for more than thirty years. Since we did not have a lawyer in our family, we could not get a fair settlement.

So, after this incident I was more inclined to study law and make a career in it. Before deciding to take up law as a career I was interested in entrepreneurship and business studies and wanted to pursue master’s in business administration (M.B.A).

Why did you choose to become a Bar & Bench Campus Ambassador?

Bar & Bench is one of the most user-friendly & credible website for legal news. From daily legal updates to academic accolades, law firm deal insights to partner promotions, interviews to job vacancies, Bar & Bench has been a one-stop solution for me during my law school.

It has helped me bag a lot of internships as I used the deal insights to write personalised cover letters. Becoming a Campus Ambassador at Bar & Bench has not only helped me to interact with peers from the legal background but has also helped me improve my communication and social skills.

What are future-plans after graduation?

After graduating, I am keen to work with a law firm in their real-estate department. I do not want to rush and work with a top-tier law firm. I believe that I have a lot to learn and need to enhance my skills before working with the top firms.

I have always believed that practical experience is more helpful than academic knowledge while studying law. I want to work with a boutique real estate firm or a mid-sized law firm so that I can learn everything from a scratch and apply my academic knowledge in real life.
