Since late last year, we have built a network of Campus Ambassadors across more than fifty law schools all over India. These law students have been providing us with information on campus events and activities, and also sharing legal articles.
This series of interviews is meant to turn the spotlight on these hardworking and dedicated individuals.
In this edition, we speak with Pushkar Keshavmurthy, a final-year student at the School of Law, Christ (Deemed) University
(Edited excerpts)
Why did you choose to study Law? Did you have any other interests before deciding to pursue law school?
Since my 10th grade, I wanted to become an Advocate having closely followed my father’s practice in criminal trials in my home town.
However, it was my leadership traits and communications skills in my pre-university days, which crystallised my choice of undergraduate studies.
I did not have any other plans or interests apart from joining a law school in Bengaluru.
Why did you choose to become a Bar & Bench Campus Ambassador?
After the first year of law school, I was motivated to involve myself in various organisational activities and leadership roles. I believe networking skills and organisational experience though greatly significant, are often-neglected in the checklists of majority of law students who ace moots/trials, publish research papers and score amazing grades.
Being an active member of the Deanery Student Council at my university, I wanted to interact and learn from my peers at other law schools and colleges.
The Bar & Bench Campus Ambassador programme not only helped me connect with law schools across the length and breadth of the country, but also gave the impetus required for a young and enthusiastic lawyer.
What are your plans after graduation?
I intend to practice commercial litigation in Bengaluru and acquire the skills required in both drafting and oral advocacy, before I look forward to making a career in international arbitration.
At present, I hold an admission offer letter with merit scholarship for this Fall from the Georgetown University Law Center to pursue LLM in International Legal Studies with a Certificate of Specialisation in International Arbitration and Dispute Settlement.
However, I might have to postpone my further studies plans for various reasons during these unprecedented times. I have always wanted to be much more than a Lawyer, and would love to take a plunge into academia and get involved in the policy making process one day!
