Bar & Bench

Over the last two years, we have built a network of Campus Ambassadors across more than fifty law schools all over India. These law students have been providing us with information on campus events and activities, and also sharing legal articles.

This series of interviews is meant to turn the spotlight on these hardworking and dedicated individuals.

In this edition, we speak with Amit Agarwal, a third-year student at Amity Law School Noida.

Why did you choose to study law?

During my school time, faculties only told us about careers in engineering and medicine. When I was in 11th, one day while returning from my coaching classes, I had a quarrel with a police officer on a small yet concerning issue that kind of shook me. While heading home from my classes, I took a pause on the road with my friends, and we were standing by the side and talking.

Out of no-where, two cops came in a jeep to us and asked us to leave the place immediately. When I tried to ask him further questions, he grabbed my bicycle, threw it, and threatened us. Since the cop wasn’t ready to listen or even tell us why it was wrong for four school students to be on the road, we had no other option but to leave.

The incident shook me as to how people in power can do whatever they feel like, and instead of making people feel safe, they scare people. The entire incident made me realize how important it is to know the law. Had I known things that could have saved me my rights in that situation, I would have been in a position to question that policemen and even call him out publicly.

Triggered by the whole incident, I went home researched things, leading to law and its scope. I started watching legal vlogs on youtube and reading legal articles and gradually developed an interest in the subject. Hence after the 12th standard, I took admission in a law school.

What made you apply for the Campus Ambassador post at Bar & Bench?

One day while surfing the internet, I saw one of my seniors who had previously been campus ambassador of Bar and Bench, had shared the link of bar and bench campus ambassador program.

Since it was my dream to be a part of this organization, I took the opportunity and applied for the same.

What are your plans after completing law?

After my graduation, I have decided to do LLM and then start a carrier in litigation. The covid-19 break has given me ample time to explore more fields and careers in law.
