Chanakya National Law University, Patna inaugurates Centre for Law & Economics [Press Release]

The centre will strive to collaborate with governmental authorities, law firms and universities to encourage research and innovation in the field of law and economics.

The Centre for Law and Economics (CLE) has been established with the aim to develop interdisciplinary research and study in the field of law and economics and shedding new light on the economic analysis of contemporary laws.

The Chanakya National Law University, (CNLU) is an autonomous law school and a National Law University in Patna. It was established in 2006 by the Government of Bihar as a public university dedicated to the field of Legal Education.

Centre for Law & Economics Inaugurated

The centre was inaugurated on 28 September, 2022. Justice Mridula Mishra, Vice-Chancellor CNLU, along with Manoranjan Prasad Srivastava, Registrar CNLU lit the lamp.

The chief guest of the event was Dr Ranita Nagar, Professor of Economics, Head of the Centre of Law and Economics, Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

The Special guest of the inaugural ceremony was Dr. Hitesh Kumar Thakkar, Assistant Professor of Economics at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

Dr. Shivani Mohan, Assistant Professor of Economics, Chanakya National Law University, Patna as well as the Centre Head enlightened the students with opening remarks during the inaugural ceremony.

Dr. Manoranjan Kumar, Assistant Professor of Law, Chanakya National Law University, Patna as well as co-director of the Centre provided the overview and a brief introduction of the centre. He introduced the students to the economic analysis of law and the aims and objectives of the newly inaugurated centre.

Justice Mridula Mishra, in her address, enlightened the students of the interplay between law and economics and outlined the importance of the prediction of law-making and the economic impact of law on society. She also added that how efficient judicial decisions based upon economic principles are important for the Judges.

The chief guest of the inaugural ceremony, Prof. (Dr) Ranita Nagar, Professor of Economics at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar said that economics itself is of multiple approaches.

She also added that economics analyses legal rules as a set of incentives aimed at bringing about desired social interest. The chief guest gave best wishes and congratulated the newly inaugurated centre.

Special guest Dr Hitesh Kumar Thakkar emphasized the importance and role of Chanakya himself in the interplay between two disciplines, the law, and economics movement. He also encouraged the Chanakya National Law University, Patna to lead the movement of law and economics in 21st century India with the assistance and aid of Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar.

Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Singh and Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar were also present in the inaugural ceremony.
