Bar & Bench

Since late last year, we have built a network of Campus Ambassadors across more than fifty law schools all over India. These law students have been providing us with information on campus events and activities, and also sharing legal articles.

This series of interviews is meant to turn the spotlight on these hardworking and dedicated individuals.

In this edition, we speak with Sharad Agnihotri, a third-year student at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun

(Edited excerpts)

Why did you choose to study law? Did you have any other interests before deciding to pursue law?

My pursuit towards the field of law was nothing more than sheer irony, I was planning to do History Hons, first but my father advised me against the idea, there were other interests too like sound engineering as well as even Philosophy Hons.

But just a day before deciding what I had to do, I typed the mother of all subjects and it showed maths, so I was in no senses going forward with that. After a lot of searching in the pursuit of the perfect subject, I came across Jurisprudence, and I observed Law technically was the only subject which inculcated every branch of various subjects, including philosophy, history, among other things.

Since I had done a bit of public speaking and elocutions in my school, and my family did have lawyers in it, so I though there is possibly no harm in doing this subject and so here I am.

Why did you choose to be a Bar and Bench Campus Ambassador?

I had previously interned with firms which dealt solely with legal journalism, what I actually observed was that legal journalism is one of the most important things in a law student’s life or a lawyer’s too, it gives a wave of self-reliant dependency when one knows all about what’s happening around him/her and especially when your profession demands that you keep yourself yourself updated.

Bar & Bench is one of the most advanced and benefitting platform for this, and to be associated with it is what makes oneself privileged and grateful.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation there are many things lined up. I would firstly be looking for a place to join first, I have done internships in various places and would be delighted if I get to work in the same sector.

Additionally, I have also plans of appearing in various exams, that is if I spare some time for myself, because the field of Law gives you ample opportunities.
