The 2nd Edition of the Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) Maritime Labour Law Academy is scheduled to be organized virtually from November 22-27, 2021.
GMU is an endeavour by Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), the state regulator for ports and maritime activities in Gujarat. The University has been conceived by visionaries to address the burgeoning need for skilled workforce in the ever-changing dynamics of the maritime sector.
The University commenced its academic journey from 2019 with the establishment of its first School – School of Maritime Law, Policy & Administration (SMLPA), which offers LL.M and Post Graduate Diploma programmes in Maritime Law and International Trade Law.
In pursuit of creating an institution of global standards, GMU has collaborated with internationally prominent institutions like Erasmus University and STC International. Many more such alliances shall be forged in time to come.
GMU Centre for Research on Maritime Labour Law was established in the year 2020. The Centre focuses on research related to various aspects of Maritime Labour Law, including occupational health and safety issues of seafarers and port workers. The Research Centre contributes to the goals of expanding knowledge and having a positive impact on society. Its vision is to get recognized globally and nationally as a centre of excellence for research and capacity building in the field of Maritime Labour Law
About the GMU Maritime Labour Law Academy (GMLLA)
Maritime workers perform an admirable service to humanity by helping move ships and a variety of cargo from one port to the other. Seafarers have to face numerous challenges working on long-term contracts, at sea, and far away from home. These include issues related to repatriation, abandonment, non-payment of wages, etc. Mindful of problems faced by seafarers in international waters, some forward-looking developments have taken place in international law.
Today, there are numerous Conventions and recommendations on working conditions in the maritime transport sector. The purpose of these is to achieve decent working conditions for seafarers and to secure economic interests through fair competition for quality ship owners.
Maritime Labour Law Academy aims to generate awareness about the current legal regime related to Maritime Labour Law. A wide range of topics, including recruitment, employment contracts and issues related to seafarer abandonment, will be discussed during the event. Sessions will be taken by some of the leading Maritime Law experts from both India and abroad.
GMU Centre for Research on Maritime Labour Law successfully organised the first edition of the event in 2020. Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the first edition, the Centre is pleased to present before you the 2nd Edition of GMU Maritime Labour Law Academy. The 2nd Edition is scheduled to be organized virtually from November 22-27, 2021.
