The project will assess administrative and governance aspects such as recruitment, transfer, facilities and services, promotion, training and culture through interviews with supervisory officers and focus group discussions with women in the force.
The project will first conduct a baseline assessment of the status of policewomen in Karnataka, and then build on the baseline research to produce a comprehensive ground assessment of challenges policewomen face in Karnataka with the aim of recommending targeted institutional measures.
The final project report will be submitted to the Karnataka Police. Further to the assessment, the project will also work on providing suggestions and measures for the police department to consider to improve the working conditions for women in Karnataka Police.
These are full-time roles based in Bengaluru.
Research and write reports and notes on legal provisions pertaining to women in police
Develop and implement targeted dissemination plans
Coordinate, supervise and proofread the translation of the created material into Kannada
Coordinate with key project stakeholders, NLSIU administration and project funders
Represent NLSIU along with the Project Head, and independently where necessary, in meetings with the Karnataka Police through the course of the study to share updates, seek inputs, present findings and finalize the recommendations of the report
Research and input into the survey questionnaire for the ground assessment study
Conduct corresponding ground assessments of challenges facing policewomen in the state in at least 4 districts total from the southern and western parts of Karnataka identified for the study including
– inputting into the assessment parameters
– inputting into the survey questionnaire and getting it translated into Kannada
– conducting focus group discussions with policewomen at different ranks in the select districts
– conducting interviews with the relevant supervisor officers, as identified
– administering the survey during the FGDs as well as at one-on-one interviews with supervisory officers; and
– collating and reviewing the survey answers in the agreed format
Convene interactions with local civil society groups, academics and experts working on gender issues to ensure recommendations on policy improvements and training on gender mainstreaming are representative of cultural contexts;
Coordinate with the designated nodal officer from the Karnataka Police to hold validation meetings.
Graduate degree, preferably in law and social sciences
Three years of work experience in the field of human rights; legal and policy research and advocacy; and/or women’s rights
Proven research and analytical skills through published work
Strong communication skills in English and Kannada
Ability to work independently.
