All 6 convicted in NLSIU student rape case awarded life imprisonment; Court dismisses claims for leniency in sentencing

A few hours ago, City and Sessions Judge Krishnamurthy B Sanjannavar awarded life sentences to each of the six convicted of the rape of an NLSIU student in October last year. Reading out the sentence in a packed courtroom, the judge referred to several judgments of the Supreme Court to conclude that this was a case where the harshest possible punishment ought to be awarded. The judge also referred to the recent Criminal Law Amendment Act, 2013 to support the awarding of a harsh punishment.
