Additional Judges appointed to Madras, Gauhati High Courts [Read Notifications]

Two notifications issued by the Central Government today intimate the appointment of additional judges to the High Courts of Madras and Gauhati. All judges have been appointed to their respective High Courts for a two year period from the date on which they assume office.

B Pugalendhi, who has served as an Additional Advocate General for Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court. With this appointment, the working strength of the Madras High Court rises to 61 against the sanctioned strength of 75 judges. This is including the name of Justice Vineet Kothari, whose transfer to the High Court was notified recently, although he is yet to assume charge of his office.

Last week, Justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and Satrughana Pujahari shifted to different High Courts, and Justice S Baskaran retired from the Madras High Court, bringing down the working strength.

The Gauhati High Court will have two more additional judges added to its ranks with the appointment of advocates Sanjay Kumar Medhi and Nani Tagia as additional judges. Their names were recommended for elevation by the Supreme Court Collegium in April this year. Their addition would take the working strength of the High Court to 19, as against a sanctioned strength of 24.
