8.8 lakh cases settled by second National Lok Adalat of 2015; Another 7 Lok Adalats in the pipeline

More than 8.8 lakh cases involving over 200 crores were settled at National Lok Adalats held across the country last week, according to a Press Information Bureau release. The settled matters were related to land acquisition, revenue and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme..Of the cases resolved on March 14, about 69000 were pending matters and 8.1 lakh were pre-litigation matters which had not reached the courts..The National Lok Adalats, which are scheduled to be organized every month on a specific subject matter, aim to reduce pendency as well as prevent additional litigation in the courts, in cases where settlements are possible. They also draw the attention of the public to the efficacious alternative dispute resolution method of the Lok Adalat. The fact that there is no further appeal to these cases will go a long way in alleviating pendency figures in courts across the country..Last month, the National Lok Adalats settled over 56,000 cases relating to cheque bouncing, recovery suits and other bank-related matters. The next series, scheduled for April 11, will deal with Labour and Family matters.
