Subramanian Swamy today asked the Delhi High Court for an investigation into the role of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the Hashimpura massacre..Chidambaram was the Minister of State for Internal Security when the riots took place in Uttar Pradesh..Forty-two persons were killed in Hashimpura village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh on May 22, 1987, when they were allegedly shot by the PAC personnel and their bodies were thrown into a canal..The submissions came in the background of multiple appeals filed by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Uttar Pradesh government as well as survivors and kin of the victims against the acquittal of 16 PAC personnel last year..In March of 2015, a trial court of Delhi had acquitted all the 16 accused on grounds of insufficient evidence..Swamy had filed an appeal assailing the trial court’s order of March 2013, that had dismissed his petition to probe the role of Chidambaram in the case. His appeal was later tagged with the other appeals pertaining to the issue..Today when the case came up for hearing before Justices GS Sistani and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, Swamy submitted that a court-monitored CBI probe was ‘necessary’ in the case..“It is a clear case of genocide. Earlier some news reports had also suggested that crucial documents of the case were destroyed by the Uttar Pradesh Government.”.The Bench, however declined to entertain any additional applications in this regard for the reason that it may further delay proceedings. The Court also directed the State Government to file the necessary documents of the case and sought replies on the appeals of NHRC and others..The case will now be heard on May 19.
