The Supreme Court today issued a bailable warrant against Calcutta High Court judge, Justice CS Karnan for failing to appear in the contempt case against him..A seven-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India, JS Khehar and comprising Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur, Pinaki Chandra Ghose, Kurian Joseph passed this order this morning after Justice Karnan chose to skip the contempt proceedings against him..A suo motu contempt petition was initiated by the Supreme Court against the maverick judge for making allegations against judges of the apex court and various High Courts..In a hearing that lasted scarcely over 10 minutes today, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi submitted before the Court,.“The fact of the matter is that he has refused to appear. And the Supreme Court Rules provide that if you fail to appear, despite notice being served, a bailable warrant can be issued. “.Faced with no choice, a grim faced CJI dictated the order directing a bailable warrant to be issued against “Shri Justice CS Karnan.” The order also notes that the bail amount would be set at a sum of Rs. 10000. A copy of the said order will be served on the Director General of Police shortly..And it does not seem like Justice Karnan is as unaffected by the matter as he projects. CJI Khehar disclosed that the judge had responded, although not in the manner expected, stating,.“We have his fax from the Registry, requesting us to restore his administrative and judicial work.”.The case will now be heard on March 31.
