The Supreme Court today issued notice to Union government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking their reply on the age criteria for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate courses..A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and M Shantanagoudar has sought the response of the Central government and MCI in a petition filed by one Sabyasachi Rai. Advocate Vaibhav Srivastava, appeared for the petitioner..The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had taken the decision to introduce a cap on age-limit in January this year following a meeting of the University Grants Committee in January this year. According to the notification issued on January 31, the upper age-limit to be eligible to sit for NEET is 25 years..There is also a cap of three attempts, but NEET 2017 is to be counted as the first attempt for all students..The petitioner has contended that there is no regulation or procedure under the MCI Act authorising prescription of such an age-limit criteria..The Centre and the MCI have been directed to file their their response by February 23.
