One year LLM gains further momentum with NALSAR offering the degree for 2013-2014 UPDATE

The National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University, Hyderabad (NALSAR) shall be offering a one-year LL.M. programme for the academic year 2013-2014. Professor Faizan Mustafa, NALSAR’s Vice Chancellor, confirmed that the one-year programme has been ratified by both, the University’s Academic and Executive Council..Speaking to Bar & Bench, Prof. Mustafa said that there would be six, separate LL.M. degrees for offer, with five specialized LL.M.s and a “general” LL.M. which would allow students to choose papers from different streams. The specialized LL.M.’s include one on International Trade Law, and an LL.M. in legal research and pedagogy. Prof. Mustafa, one of the principal proponents for a shorter LL.M. degree, said that admissions would be conducted through the Common Law Admission Test..The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS) may also be offering the one-year programme from the following academic year. When contacted, Dr. Ishwara Bhatt, the Vice Chancellor at WBNUJS said that a decision on this would be taken in a few weeks time. The National Law University, Jodhpur shall also be taking a final decision on this within a few weeks..Jindal Global Law School, and Christ University’s School of Law are two private law schools that had already started offering the one-year degree for the coming academic year..On September 6, 2012 the University Grant’s Commission had approved the one-year degree and subsequently released the guidelines in connection with the programme..Update on February 27, 2013: One of our readers has pointed out that the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi has already sought applications for a one-year LL.M. programme.
