NGT again: 100 crore environmental compensation imposed on ship owner for oil spill

The National Green Tribunal today imposed Rs. 100 crore as damages for oil spill in the contiguous zone of Indian waters. In a petition filed by one Samir Mehta, a Bench presided by Chairperson Swatanter Kumar directed, Delta Shipping Services, the owner of the ship MV Rak to pay the said amount as compensation for causing damage to environment. The Court also imposed Rs. 5 crore as damages on Adani Enterprises which was the consignee of the coal being carried by the ship.
