The Madras High Court today allowed a plea for extension of the parole granted to S Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case..After hearing brief submissions by Advocate M Radhakrishnan for Nalini and Additional Public Prosecutor Aiyapparaj, the Division Bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and M Nirmal Kumar passed an order granting a three week extension of the ordinary leave already granted to Nalini, which was due to end on August 25..APP Aiyapparaj had urged the Court to wait until a request made for parole extension by Nalini was decided by the State Government. He informed that Nalini had made two such requests, one to the prison authorities and one to the Government. He further submitted that the prison authorities had rejected her request citing restrictions in Rule 22 (3) of the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentence Rules, 1982. However, the request was still under active consideration by the State Government..The Bench, however, proceeded to grant the plea for parole extension after noting that (unlike the prison authorities) the government was not prevented from granting the extension. Further, it was also recorded that no adverse complaints have been made concerning Nalini’s conduct during the parole period, as admitted by the APP..The parole extension has been granted subject to compliance of the same conditions imposed by the Court when it granted parole for the first time last month. The conditions so imposed include intimation of place of stay etc. and restrictions on interacting with the media and political parties..Nalini was granted parole for the first time in 27 years last month, to make arrangements for her daughter’s wedding.
