Law student approaches Delhi HC for probe in DUSU elections

Corrupt practices in elections again came under the scanner yesterday when a plea was heard in Delhi High Court regarding illegal activities like bribing and intimidation of voters by candidates in Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Elections..Counsel for the petitioner, a first year law student, submitted before the Court that the Lyngdoh Committee Report had laid down clear guidelines to conduct student union elections and these guidelines had been expressly flouted by the candidates..The counsel further argued,.“Three hundred car rallies are being held in luxury cars like Audi, BMW etc by kids who aren’t older than 21-22 years. The (Lyngdoh) Guidelines also say that no candidate shall be associated with any political party but wherever one goes, ABVP, NSUI and AAPs posters are to be found plastered on the walls. .There is even a concert scheduled to be held at Talkatora Stadium where the CM is slated to introduce the candidates. The Committee Report had set maximum expenditure to be limited at Rs 5000 per candidate but here crores of rupees are being spent everyday.”.The counsel also submitted that he had addressed a complaint to the Grievance Cell of DUSU on September 1 and named the candidates indulging in such practices. He prayed before the Court that his intention was not to stop the elections but a direction from the Bench to remove the names of these candidates from contesting the elections..The Single Bench of Justice VP Vaish then directed the DUSU Grievance Cell to treat the present writ petition as a representation and act upon it expeditiously, within two days as the elections are due to be held on September 11..Before disposing of the plea, Justice Vaish also made an oral observation to the Petitioner that if the petitioner was not satisfied with the outcome of the investigation, he could approach the Court again in a fresh petition and arraign the candidates as parties to it..Meanwhile, this was shared on Twitter.
