The Research Foundation for Governance in India (RFGI), a think tank working towards legal reforms, has launched a new initiative to simply laws..Lawforme.in is a website that explains laws and legal processes through the use of cartoon graphics. Founded by Kanan and Kelly Dhru, RFGI had also launched “Lawtoons” last year..Kanan was felicitated at the 2014 Innovating Justice awards organised by the Hague Institute for Internationalisation of Law (HiiL)..Describing her experience at the awards that are held in The Hague, Dhru told Bar & Bench,.“Every year, HiiL organizes a competition where they invite innovations in justice from around the world. I had previously done a law-based cartoon called Lawtoons, and I entered both this and Law For Me in the competition. Law For Me ended up making the cut after I made a presentation on how laws can be explained through flowcharts and designs. It was still a nascent idea and still needed some work at that time. But it was selected as one of the top 9 legal innovations in the world and I went to The Hague for the awards..There were Chief Justices and senior lawyers from different parts of the world who felt that my idea would be very helpful. They even ended up giving us a grant, which will really help us do what we want to do. It was a wonderful experience.”.On the inspiration behind Law For Me.“I wanted to create a platform to make laws simpler for people and make access to justice easier. Laws can be so intimidating for people and they are hesitant to confront the legal process. Laws are very logical; to file a case in court, you have to follow simple, linear steps. It’s a designed logic and I though this could be applied in terms of communicating the laws to people.”.On future plans.“We want it to be a one-stop shop for understanding law in India. We want to take as many laws as possible and break them up into everyday scenarios. Right now, we have only one scenario per law, but there could be so many more. We want to make it a marketplace for legal knowledge.”
