Justice RM Lodha has been appointed the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). According to a statement by the Law Ministry,.“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from April 27, 2014.”.Justice Lodha enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Rajasthan in 1973 and practised in the Rajasthan High Court. He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on January 31, 1994. He was transferred to the Bombay High Court the same year where he served for 13 years..He was then retransferred to the Rajasthan High Court in 2007 and was appointed the Chief Justice of Patna High Court in 2008. On December 17, 2008 Justice Lodha was elevated as Supreme Court judge..Justice Lodha, who is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Sathasivam, will serve as the CJI for a very short term of 5 months before he retires on September 27, 2014. The last two CJIs – Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice P Sathasivam – also had brief tenures lasting less than a year.
