In a bid to alleviate the pendency of criminal appeals, lawyers of the Jharkhand High Court have agreed to work through the vacations, starting from May 20..The initiative was floated by Chief Justice Virender Singh, who sought to dispose of Division Bench criminal appeals where the appellants had been in custody for more than 10 years, as well as appeals before a single judge which are more than 10 years old. In a meeting held on April 27, Chief Justice Singh was glad to find that he had the full support of the bar..The decision comes at a time when more than half of the posts in the Jharkhand High Court are lying vacant; only 12 of the 25 approved posts are filled..These special benches will be constituted for the first time in the High Court’s history. In preceding years, vacation benches were limited to hearing urgent bail matters..And it is a much needed initiative, especially if you look at the statistics of pending cases in the Jharkhand High Court. As of November 2015, there were 17,114 criminal appeals pending in the High Court. In other words, 21.36% of the total pending cases were criminal appeals before single judges and division benches..Just last week, the Bar Council of India had urged members of bar associations around the country to work through the vacations..Image taken from here.
