Venture Intelligence 2013: AZB tops PE league table ahead of ALMT, K Law & AMSS; Amarchand tops M&A league followed by Khaitan

Venture Intelligence, a research organisation focusing on commercial transactions in India, recently released its Private Equity and Mergers & Acquisitions League Tables for the year 2013..PE League Table.AZB & Partners tops the Private Equity (PE) league table with 166 points (with 42 deals) followed by ALMT Legal and K Law at the second spot with 80 points (with 20 deals) each..According to the Venture Intelligence report, Amarchand Mangaldas, Samvad Partners and NovoJuris finished joint third with 76 points each (with 19 deals)..Indus Law and Tatva Legal jointly share the fourth position with 60 point (15 deals)..AZB advised on a number of significant PE deals in 2013 including KKR’s acquisition of a controlling stake in Alliance Tire Group, the largest private equity control transaction in the last seven years in India and Baring Asia’s $265 million investment in Lafarge India. ALMT Legal advised on Bain Capital’s acquisition of Blackstone’s equity stake in Emcure Pharmaceutical, while K Law advised Nexus Ventures and Kalaari Capital on their participation in the $50 million raised by e-commerce firm Snapdeal.com, according to Venture Intelligence release..AZB & Partners also topped the table in terms of deals advised by value ($2.6 billion), followed by Amarchand Mangaldas ($892 million) at second position and Khaitan & Co ($784 million) at third spot..The new entrants in the league table included Bharucha & Partners and P&C Legal..International law firms Allen & Overy, Shearman & Sterling and Bird & Bird too made it to the list..M&A League Table.Amarchand Mangaldas tops the M&A league table with 136 points (with 37 deals) followed by Khaitan & Co with 92 points (25 deals) and AZB & Partners with 90 points (26 deals) at second and third spot respectively..Amarchand Mangaldas advised on $2.47 billion acquisition of Videocon’s stake in Mozambique gas field by ONGG Videsh and Oil India Limited. Khaitan & Co advised on deals including Torrent Pharmaceuticals’ $323 million acquisition of formulations business of Elder Pharmaceuticals and McGraw Hill’s open offer of $214 million for 22.23% stake in CRISIL..AZB advised on $150 million acquisition of Ashirvad Pipes by Belgium-based Aliaxis Group and the completion of the 55% stake acquisition in Cello Pens by France’s BIC, according to Venture Intelligence release..Other law firms which have advised on significant number of M&A deals during the year included Trilegal (20 deals), J Sagar Associates (10 deals) and Tatva Legal (10 deals)..Amarchand Mangaldas ($8.7 billion) also topped the table in terms of value of the deals advised followed by Luthra & Luthra ($1.8 billion), S&R Associates ($1.3 billion) and Khaitan & Co ($1.2 billion)..According to Venture Intelligence release, Khaitan & Co topped the inbound deals chart with 16 deals, followed by Amarchand and AZB with 14 and 13 deals respectively. AZB & Partners led the outbound M&A deals with four deals. Amarchand Mangaldas deal count included 22 domestic deals, followed by AZB and Khaitan & Co with 9 deals each..New entrants to the M&A table included Finsec Law, P&C Legal and Bharucha & Partners.
