The veteran lawyer was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002..Reports say that Harish Salve will also receive a Padma award, along with constitutional law expert Subhash Kashyap. Salve was not reachable for comment at the time of publication..In an e-mail to Bar & Bench, Venugopal said,.“This gives me a feeling of fulfilment. It is heart-warming that my 61 years of practice at the Bar has been recognized by the conferment of the Padma Vibhushan.”.Venugopal, who describes his entry into the legal profession as an accident, enrolled as an advocate in the erstwhile Mysore High Court in January 1954. He subsequently went on to practice in the Madras High Court, after which he moved to the Supreme Court in 1963. He was designated as a Senior Advocate of the Apex Court on March 6, 1972..An inspiration to young litigating lawyers, Venugopal said,.“It is essential that the young lawyer should use every single opportunity to show that he has a good background of law, that he has studied the Procedure Codes thoroughly, that he has a good background of the case, and in the absence of his senior, he is in a position to argue the case to the best of his ability. If this happens, the Judge would make a note of the young lawyer and would speak about him to the other Judges as well.”.He concluded by saying,.“I would advise the young lawyers therefore to read the judgments which are being delivered periodically by the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts.”
