A day before Ajmal Kasab’s death sentence was executed, the Supreme Court declared that there needs to be a greater degree of consistency in the manner in which punishments are awarded in cases involving capital offences. The judgment, delivered by the Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Madan Lokur, also examined the power of the appropriate Government to grant remissions and the manner in which the same ought to be done.
