It looks like elections to the P&H High Court Bar Association will soon be following the same methods used by the Supreme Court Bar Association..The Bar Association has been directed to strike off the names of those lawyers who were given waivers with respect to the association’s subscription fees..Justice Masih’s order comes a few weeks after a stay on the Bar Association elections while hearing a PIL filed by Ranjan Lakhanpal. As reported earlier, Lakhanpal had contended the Bar Association had deliberately allowed the influx of “non-practicing” and “outsider” lawyers in the electoral list..This had been done by waiving of the mandatory subscription fees required for membership into the Bar Association; a waiver that the High Court held has no statutory basis whatsoever..Speaking to Bar & Bench, Lakhanpal said that the High Court’s order was exactly what was required to improve the state of the Bar. He also said that it would encourage genuine lawyers to participate in the elections, something that the Bar desperately needs..“If we don’t step in, then we leave the field open to those who have no scruples.”.The Bar Association has been asked to complete this exercise by April 27, with elections to be completed on or before May 8, 2015..Read the full order below
