All SCBA posts to come with four year maximum; SCBA votes on Amendment of Rules

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday voted in favour of restricting anyone to hold an SCBA post for more than four years in his/ her lifetime. Seven resolutions were put to vote out of which only one was successfully passed. Of the seven resolutions, two were proposed by requisitions in writing while five were proposed by the Executive Committee of the SCBA..Since the resolutions required amendment to the SCBA Rules (Rules), each resolution had to be passed by two-third majority of the members present and voting to effect amendment to the Rules. The voting took place from 10 am to 4 pm in Library no. 1 of the Supreme Court and was confined to the members of the SCBA whose names were present in the SCBA voters list of 2013..The following were the resolutions that were put to vote:.Resolution 1(a) No member of the Bar shall be eligible to hold any one post for more than four years in his / her lifetime(b) No member of the Bar shall be eligible to hold all posts of the Executive Committee including the post of any office bearer for more than six years in his/ her lifetime.Resolution 2No member of the SCBA shall be eligible to contest election or hold any of the twenty one posts (six office bearers or fifteen members of the Executive Committee) who has contested election for any of those posts and lost for four times or more.Resolution 3To delete Rule 3 (ii) which defines the term “Associate member” and thereby scrap that class from the SCBA membershipResolution 4To increase the term of the Executive Committee to two years instead of one by amending Rule 17Resolution 5To enhance the security deposit to be paid along with the nomination form for seeking election to different posts of the Executive CommitteeResolution 6To amend Rule 22 of the Rules so that the requisition for calling a General Meeting/ Special General Meeting be signed by 250 members instead of 150.Resolution 7To enable temporary members to become regular members on the basis of entry with proximity card to the High Security Zone of the Supreme Court sixty times a calendar year for two calendar years each..However only Resolution 1(a) was able to garner the requisite approval of the SCBA members.
