As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Bar Council of India (BCI), the Institute of Law at Nirma University was selected to host the 27^th BCI Moot Court Competition. The event was held from February 17-19, 2012 and saw NALSAR outperform School of Excellence, Chennai to win the competition.

The competition saw participation of 43 teams from various law universities across the country. The competition was structured into four rounds with each round having a separate moot problem in a different area of law. The first round's problem dealt with criminal law, the second round with corporate law, the third law with environmental law and the final round was based on constitutional law.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by a number of legal luminaries including Justice (Retd.) A.M.Ahmadi former Chief Justice of India; Ashok Kumar Deb, Managing Trustee, BCI; Mr. Hemantkumar Patel, BCI Trustee and Prof. (Dr.) Purvi Pokhariyal, Dean of Institute of Law, Nirma University.

Chief Guest Ahmadi, in his inaugural address, spoke on how, law as a profession, is a field which would never be monotonous; “The more you stay with [the] profession and like the profession, the [more the] profession will like you.”, he observed.

The two teams which qualified to the Final Round were NALSAR and School of Excellence, Chennai. The final round was judged by Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra of the Supreme Court; Justice (Retd.) B. N. Srikrishna; Justice (Retd.) M.B.Shah; Zafar Ahmed Khan, Vice Chairman, BCI and Biri Singh Sinsinwar of the BCI.

The NALSAR team (of Devdeep Ghosh, Charitha Shashiraj & Malvika Prasad) was adjudged winner of the final round with Malvika Prasad from NALSAR being adjudged Best Female Advocate and R.S. Diwaagar from SOE being adjudged as the Best Male Advocate for the competition. Charitha Shashiraj from NALSAR also picked up the BCI Scholarship Award for the final round.

The final day concluded with the Prize Distribution and Valedictory Ceremony. Chief Guest Gyan Sudha Mishra expressed appreciation over the participation of private institutions such as Nirma University for providing an alternative forum for legal education. She observed and further stated that such competitions would take the budding lawyers to the international level.

B. N. Srikrishna spoke of the charm of law as a profession and also said that one must be brave in the pursuit of justice. M.B.Shah, in his short speech, encouraged the students to join litigation.
