Patna based lawyer, Shruti Singh, has filed a case in the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Patna, accusing actor Amitabh Bachchan and director R. Balakrishna of "poking fun at disabled people" through the movie, 'Paa'.
Singh feels that the Amitabh's portrayal of a 13 year old suffering from progeria, a disease that accelerates aging in a humorous yet compassionate manner might be violative of Persons with Disabilities Act, and therefore sought a probe.
Singh feels that the movie works against the Act's objective of eliminating discrimination of disabled people and ensuring their equal participation in society. However, reports seem to indicate a lack of clarity on Singh's part. She has asked the court to decide whether the movie is violative of the Act, and in the event that it is found to be so, to take "appropriate action" against the movie's producers and actors for making a joke out of disabled people.
"With so many pending cases in the trial and high courts, litigation like this is frivolous and unnecessary. People should think things through before filing cases based on personal bias," opined another advocate in the Patna High Court who did not wish to be named.

- 1. "In my personal view, 'Paa' has in no way made out any jokes for the disabled people. Instead it has shown a picture of a progeria affected person who has spent his remaining days as a happy person knowing of the fact that he is going to die..He has a group of friends who are always there to help him, who are part of all the mischieves, his teachers, the school principal, everyone is there to help him and support him whenever in need. This movie gives hope to those who think that they are alone in this world and a disgrace to the society..So, instead of making a controversy out of this, we should come forward and help such people and not make fun of them..".
