Supreme Confirmation: President appoints 4 of 5 Judges

The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the elevation of 5 state Chief Justices to the Supreme Court in August this year. President Pratibha Patil [pictured] confirmed the appointments of Chief Justices Ananga Kumar Patnaik, Tirath Singh Thakur, Surinder Singh Nijjar and K.S. Radhakrishnan. The Judges are expected to assume charge soon.
After uproar about corruption charges against Justice P.D. Dinakaran, the collegium had stalled Justice Dinakaran's elevation. This takes the Supreme Court's strength to 26 after Justice B.N. Agarwal retired last month.
