The President has appointed Piyush Mathur as an Additional Judge in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Also, Nalla Bhuma Narayan Rao and Samudrala Govindarajulu have been appointed as Additional Judges in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Additional Judges are usually appointed for a period of two years. Usually, they are elevated to the status of a permanent judge before the end of their two year term.
Alok Singh has been appointed as a permanent Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. Recent statistics indicate that there are over 40 lakh cases pending before the various High Courts across the country.
The 21 High Courts in the country allow for 886 judges. However, only 654 posts have been filled and functioning. The largest bench in the country, the Allahabad High Court has a sanctioned strength of 160 judges of which only 88 posts are filled.
The incumbent Chief Justice, Mr. K.G. Balakrishnan has expressed his concern about the number of cases that have been pending in the Courts. He had also called for utilizing Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms to reduce the burden on the Courts and aid the quick disposal.
