NUJS takes on Outlook for faulty ranking methodology

Bar & Bench News Network

Aug 20, 2010

It has been no secret that every year when various publications come out with rankings of educational institutions, there have been various concerns regarding the methodology adopted. Yet, there has been no discernable reaction or steps taken by anybody from the legal industry against the unfair practices used.

Professor Shamnad Basheer and students of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata has now written to the Outlook publication regarding their methodology used to rank colleges, specifically law colleges. The letter calls upon the Editor-in-Chief, Vinod Mehta to look into the discrepancies of the methodology and to make it more transparent for a more responsible list of ranking. Saying that a large number of students depend on these rankings, it is important to maintain journalistic standards. The letter also goes on to say that if professional ethics are not met, proceedings will be launched against the publication with the Press Council of India under the Press Council (Procedure for Inquiry) Regulations, 1979.

The letter also lists 8 flaws in the Outook rankings and provides a detailed methodology of the disparity in the rankings. Professor Shamand along with students of the 3rd year, Debanshu Khettry and Shambo Nandy are the authors of the letter.

A copy of the letter can be found here.

  • 1. "Great step by NUJS. These rankings are a big fraud and a big facade. Kudos to Prof. Basheer and the students involved. I think all national law schools should boycott these rankings and also India Today's which is an equally big sham.". Jammy, Calcutta
  • 2. "I think bar and bench should also cover Mr. Shambo Nandy's revolutionary steps in changing the face of NUJS library infrastructure. I think Mr. Nandy deserves a Bharat Ratna and should be a part of Ministry of Human Resource Development. He will do a better job than Mr. Sibal.". 123 Guy, Calcutta
  • 3. "Finally someone has the guts to speak about the dirty rankings game played by these jokers. Bar & bench team should look at these critically as you have the reputation and reach to do an indepth analysis like you did in the compensation report sometime back. great work professor basheer. you should not keep quiet. ". Finally Someone, Delhi
  • 4. "BRAVO!!! someone had the guts to question the faulty ranking!!! i would like to stress on the part of Faculty, its high time faculty rating is given importance cause that's what differs a good law school from an average one ". AtoZ, (Unknown City?)
  • 5. "Awesome job! Finally someone spoke against the faulty rankings!! This was a much needed step. Kudos to the bell-ringers!". Concerned Student, New Delhi

  • 8. "All the NUJS, NALSAR, NLU friends writing the great things about thr colleges and their respective rankings, please note that none of the colleges have fulfilled the ambition for which they were given a special status by the government of India. It has been time and again said by various legal luminaries that the said colleges have failed in thr ambition. These colleges were given the best and chosen brains to lead, however, just running in the race of being recruited by the shroffs' or the luthras' or some even managing a seat at the CC or W&C, you have nothing great to add to the legal reform by Indian government. Law schools are not just made for this. I guess thats the reason why the maximum litigators, PPs, profs and the judiciary belongs to remaining 900 law schools of the country. I am would request that outlook and india today should also consider this aspect in thr rankings. Law schools are not only for giving associates to these law firms, but much more and as of date the so called "National Law Schools" have failed in doing anything apart from that. Our judicial and the teaching system needs the best of brains to add to the betterment of the legal system and rather not running behind the hourly rates paid by big MNCs.". Government Spectator, (Unknown City)
  • 9. "last year when they were ranked 2, above colleges like nalsar, campus law centre and nliu bhopal, they did not object to it, infact they even boasted of it on their website...hw come outlook's "ranking methodology" changed in a period of just one year? :p". Vishal Binod, Facebook Feeds

  • 14. "i think there is much more to law schools than believing in these stupid rankings. i feel that nujs have nothing better to do than to write these nonsensical letters to editors and crying "please increase my rank"...hahha rofl go ahead...however it would have been appreciated had nujs faculty and students rather focused on increasing their ability...... throwing mud over fellow national law schools in full public and thereby suggesting that they pay money for these stupid rankings run against counter to my belief of nujs as a responsible institution..shame on u nujs go cry and get an increment in ur rank.....that is what u ppl want...". Abc, (Unknown City?)
  • 15. "i totally agree, the ranks are always madeup... and top firms fall for the chaos created by these ranks with fake credibility and no proof.". Sameer, New Delhi
  • 16. "They (NUJS) just need to grow up instead of crying. I wouldn't be surprised if they even one day claim to be better than Oxford or Harvard. They live in their own dream land and have even had issues with their students. [Edited] This isn't allegation by NUJS students need to get a life and accept the harsh reality. They live in their dream world of 4 acre and need to wake up to truth instead of cribbing about it. ". Secret, (Unknown City)

  • 18. "@14 and 16: I think you are the one who needs to grow up. Have you even read the letter that you are saying NUJS throws mud over fellow national law schools? Please read the letter before writing nonsense. Its pointless even saying anything to pea-sized brains like you.". LP, New Delhi
  • 19. "16, stop such maligning commentary. If you see what the IDIA guys are upto better see this blog Link better come to NUJS and see how proactively and dilligently prof. Basheer and the student volunteers are taking this up.". Response To 16,
  • 20. "I agree with comment no. 9...its just a ploy for publicity..why didnt they chose to write a letter when they were 2nd last year....@10...im writing this only after reading the letter...why they are not challenging India Today's rankings???? only because india today has ranked them on 6th instead of 8th from last year...@10...FYI...outlook has ranked them higher than India Today then also they are challenging Outlook because they have degraded them...what a ploy for publicity.... ". Cycle,
  • 21. "Think of a situation where your exam papers have been checked and marks have been announced, you find that you have got very low marks while someone else who always used to fail suddenly have got more than you (also as a side note the student who has now sailed forward has been taking coaching from the examiner). wouldnt it be obvious for you to ask where you went wrong and ask for some transparency? From what I have gathered from the letter (which I believe would have no effect whatsoever) the main thurst is on asking the editor to make the data on which the rankings have been made to be published online so that rankings becomes objective and transparent (the test would be that given the data any avg joe can calculate the rankings). One example on clat preference based objective transparent with all data points would be at Link". Unwillinglawyer,
  • 22. "People who are making comments on why NUJS is protesting now and didn't protest last time round when NUJS was ranked 2nd JUST HAVEN'T READ THE LETTER available here Link letter tells why THE METHODOLOGY WAS ERRONEOUS AND MOTIVATED BY PROFIT. And hence NUJS took the brave and the right step of protesting against just irresponsible journalism.". Answer To Why NUJS Is Protesting Now And Didn't Protest Last Year., (Unknown City)
  • 23. "Great work guys! Thanks for helping out the society and raising your voice against these magazines. People cribbing about it are just envious and jealous and have nothing better to do. I am happy so see NUJS-ers actually doing something. I have read the letter and I agree with ". PB, Bangalore

  • 25. "I dont know why NUJS grads are even responding to guys who are against writing this letter. Since most of the guys commenting against the letter to outlook are from the non top 3 NLU's (top 3 being NLS, NALSAR and NUJS) there is no point in reverting to their attack. Most of the guys making irrational comments above are the guys from colleges who have just added "national" to their name and think that they are really in competition with NUJS. Please grow up guys. First get your school in order and thereafter comment on NAlsar or nujs. ". Nalsar Grad, Bangalore

  • 27. "i dont remember the year...but Outlook ranked ICFAI Tech, an engineering college as first .... which actually doesnt have an own campus, no aicte recognition, nor validity for the certificate they issue...thats their precedent". Raviteja Advocate, Hyderabad - 9866116176
  • 28. "This is a great initiative. Let us see how things shape.". B, Bhopal
  • 29. "@20: They have written to India Today as well. The letter questions them on their methodology. It does not crib about why they were ranked low. Its asking for data to be revealed. Its asking for influence of advertisements if any. Its not specific to NUJS. Mr.Cycle, you have surely not gone through the letter. Please criticize the arguments raised in the letter if you have enough intelligence to do so otherwise no point maligning NUJS for taking up this issue and raising their voice. My respect for NUJS has grown. I can see how they care about the uninformed and can raise their voice against big and powerful. Tomorrow if God forbid you or your loved one makes a wrong decision, you will surely not like it would you?". Motor-cyle, New Delhi
