Rs. 30 crore for legal battle with Pak on Kishenganga
The Economic Times has reported on how India and Pakistan are set for a battle in an international court to settle their dispute over the Jammu and Kashmir-based Kishenganga hydel project, the Government has earmarked Rs. 30 crore ($ 6.5 million) to take care of the legal expenses.
Bar & Bench had earlier reported on the ongoing tussle between the two governments on this particular project. Pakistan had first approached the International Court of Arbitration and since then both the countries have appointed well known legal names to represent their interests before the ICA.
Cracking the BlackBerry
The Indian Express carries a column by Trilegal Partner, Rahul Matthan on how the showdown between the Indian government and Research in Motion, the Canadian company behind the BlackBerry service has reached a crescendo. Indian security agencies have always been leery of BlackBerry’s walled garden approach. But after the UAE, Saudi Arabia and now Lebanon announced a ban on BlackBerry services, the Indian government seems to have been galvanized into action.
Five centres for advanced legal studies to be set up
The Hindu reports on the Union Law Ministry’s proposal to establish five regional centres for advanced legal studies and research. According to the draft of The Centres for Advanced Legal Studies and Research Bill, 2010, prepared by the Ministry, the intention is to establish an autonomous networked Centre for Advanced Legal Studies and Research in each region with the objective of carrying out cutting edge research on various aspects of law, with the thrust on new and emerging areas. It is also aimed at providing common facilities for legal research for a group of law schools or for national law universities in general.
