Bar & Bench News Network
This year Luthra & Luthra and Amarchand have been the biggest recruiters so far for the batch graduating in 2011 followed by Trilegal and Khaitan.
Luthra has hired 11 from NUJS, Kolkata; 14 from NLU, Jodhpur; 6 from NLSIU, Bangalore and 3 from NALSAR, Hyderabad, thus bringing the tally to 34, near the number of 45 which they intend to hire this year. Luthra will fill in the deficit by looking at laterals and would also be visiting GNLU, Gandhinagar.
The Bangalore office of Luthra will accommodate 2 of the 34 hires while 16 graduates each will join the Delhi and Mumbai offices.
Amarchand on the other hand has recruited 41 students. The firm has recruited 8 students from NLSIU, Bangalore, 9 from NUJS, Kolkata, and 12 each from NALSAR, Hyderabad and GNLU, Gandhinagar.
Amarchand has also hired this year from IIT Kharagpur for their Intellectual Property department. Shardul Shroff in a statement to Bar & Bench said, “We have hired 45 lawyers since October 2009 across various levels. The focus this year will also be on recruiting LLMs and experienced lawyers rather than relying merely on the newly qualified lawyers from India and abroad”.
Trilegal, which was one of the largest recruiters last year, has lapped up 14 graduates this year. The pan India recruitment is being handled by Partner Nishant Parikh, who said, “Depending on finding the right talent, the firm is looking to hire more graduates.” Trilegal has lapped up 6 students from NLSIU, Bangalore, 5 students from NLU, Jodhpur, 2 students from NUJS, Kolkata and 1 student from NALSAR, Hyderabad. Nishant Parikh also explained that the firm will soon visit NLIU, Bhopal for recruitment.
Khaitan has recruited 12 students so far and is looking at adding more this year. Speaking to Bar & Bench, Partner Upendra Joshi, who is incharge of recruitment said, “We scout for the best talent and based on our rigorous recruitment process whoever qualifies is hired”. Khaitan is yet to recruit from the NLUs of Bhopal, Jodhpur, and Gandhinagar and is also looking at visiting ILS and Symbiosis in Pune. So far Khaitan has recruited 8 students from NUJS, Kolkata and 4 students from NALSAR, Hyderabad.
Graduate hiring in most firms have already begun and several of these law firms are scaling up their recruitment process and are visiting campuses well ahead of time.
Speaking with Bar & Bench, Anirban Mazumdar, Recruitment Faculty in-charge for NUJS, Kolkata said, “Our recruitments started in the month of July and is still in progress for this semester. Out of a batch of 95 students 40 have already accepted offers.”
Job markets have definitely bounced back with firms aggresively looking to hire talent. Law firms have already started hiring a year in advance, which is very different from last year where the mood was dull. With the positive recruitment trend, the number of hires is only going to increase which should be good news to the current batch of graduates.
See Bar & Bench’s exhaustive report on the recruitment statistics of the 2010 batch of NLSIU, NALSAR and NUJS.

- 1. "Khaitan has offered many offers to NUJS guys. Your article doesn't mention it. Please check. ". Abc, (Unknown City)
- 2. "will foreign firms recruit from 2011?". Guest, Mumbai
- 3. "Good to see the jobs market bounce back. Last year was really bad. this year, i think the law firms ahve gone mad in recruiting in advance. Some of the people that have been recruited are really sub-standard people who have not track record. i dont know whether they will be in the law firm for long. ". Guest, Bangalore
- 4. "Jodhpur and GNLU are the new stars in the legal world. I think the so called top three law schools have to tighten their belt or face the axe soon. What happened to GLC and DU will happen to them if they dont improve their quality. I am seeing some really useless people gradaute out of NLS and NUJS. Although the top rankers may be good, these law schools are also producing some junk". Guest, Jodhpur
- 5. "Dear Abc,Thanks for your comment.Khaitan has hired from NUJS, Kolkata and not from NLSIU, Bangalore. We have rectified the mistake.". Ed, Bangalore
- 6. "Sad to see the poor performance of NALSAR this year...it is the result of incompetent management...standard is going down day by day...". Guest, Mumbai
- 7. "sad to see NALSAR being ruined by politics...with reservation etc coming in things will get worse. chandrababu naidu you are being missed!". Guest, Mumbai
- 8. "Despite the fact that even top Law schools now produce junks, the graduates from mid-tier law school do not get the oppurtunity also to face the recruitment process because of the absence of brand name tag in their resume. becuase of pre-conceived notions our countries business nad politics is suffering now its job world which definitely includes legal fraternity wl also suffer. I am also apart of that mid-tier college who urge to at least make for those quality firm interviews but don have the tag to help me make my pave towards that.........its sad but ironical fact of todays scenario". Abc, Delhi
- 9. ""Sad to see no mentioning of Government Law College, Mumbai or Faculty of Law, DU, when the fact is that the Faculty of Law have produced one of the prestigious legal luminaries, It seems big firms don't feel like going to old instiutions"". Rajiv Kumar Dubey, Advocate, Delhi
- 10. "what about the students who have passed out from campus law centre delhi.... the recruitment cell in the campus is good for nothing and students dont get the oppurtunity to work in the leading law firms of india". Guest, Delhi, (Unknown City?)
- 11. "Is it the criteria with firms only in National Schools students and that too only new comers ,how about recruitment of experienced ,wanting change and attachment with big firms ? The so called reputed Law-Firms as mentioned here the feeling it seems is find talents to recruit min NLU'S. How about people applying otherwise it seems applications are thrown in garbage probably they are not talented or may be it is a politics or show off as rightly exprssed here. How about talents of big univ. like DU, Bombay etc.". PUSHPA JHURANEY, Delhi
- 12. "No doubt that most national law students get hired on the basis of brand and many of them do not remain with law firms for long. DU no doubt is lagging behind with curriculum but all DU students are well placed generally after 2-3 years down the line. DU produces lawyers with comprehensive laweysr suited for corporate and litigation as well. National law schools produce only corporate lawyers unduly stressed with performace anxieties and the veru first placements.". LegallyRight, Gurgaon
- 13. "brilliant take on the changing trends of recruitment in law schools across the country. its great to see places like GNLU coming up and putting up a good show, along with its peers. being a law schoolite myself i do feel that Bhopal has gone down a bit when it comes to the reputation among the prospective recruiters, Jodhpur has few really good guys and these guys are placed well. as far as Nalsar is concerned i wouldn't go as far as saying that they have lost their reputation, it has a small batch and students have lots of options in their hands. I have seen them quite often on unbeaten tracks post law-school.". Diljeet, Delhi
- 14. "what is the package Khaitan offered this year?". Guest, Jodhpur
- 15. "Why do students from other law schools find it hard to digest that good students do not need a 'brand tag' to get recruited? NUJS has had fabulous recruitments on the first day of their final year with 30 out of the 40 students who sat for interviews getting placed. If NUJS students do not go around posting crap about other law schools, students from jodhpur, nalsar and wherever should not take any credit away from NUJS and the recruitment committee as well. At the end of the, no firm is foolish enough to pick up "junk". So if these firms didn't hire you or your school-mates, stop calling others bad names. PS - NO. The NUJS toppers are still to be recruited. ". Guest, Taunton
- 16. "How about placing an experienced of about 8-10 years and not a new comer. What is their statistics ?(Practically nothing) that's what my personal experience .". PUSHPA JHURANEY, DELHI
- 17. "there appears to be a blind competion for increasing the number of placements,at the cost of quality and experiance in legal field. Rajendra Babbar Advocate, Bhopal.". Rajendra Babbar, Bhopal
- 18. "khaitan by far has offered the highest package so far. It is rumored to be close to 15 lacs.". Unknown, Mumbai
- 19. "what about the law students of du ?". Unknown, Delhi
- 20. "what about the private law schools? Will they ever think about them?". Himani, Bhubaneswar
- 21. "@ babbaar: there appears to be a case of sour grapes in your career". ThirdEyeOpen, Peepli
- 22. "Khaitan has offered the biggest package among law firms this year and a couple of my friends from NALSAR have bagged it this time!! Kudos to you guys!!". Unknown, Mumbai
- 23. "Lets stop talking about NUJS or whatever. NALSAR has toppled both NUJS and NLSIU in the number of placements as we speak. So lets not see whether they took 30 junkies from NUJS on the very first day, NALSAR is way ahead. ". Unknown, Mumbai
- 24. "NALSAR's reputation has gone down dramatically because of these reasons:1.) Dr. Ranbir Singh, the man behind NALSAR has now joined NLUD. NALSAR was under his care through and through and now NALSAR misses Ranbir the adminstrator and Ranbir the VC badly.2.) Many good faculty members quit their jobs after Prof. Ranbir Singh left. NALSAR is left with very little good faculty members. On the other hand NUJS has recruited some brilliant faculty members like Mr. Prabash Ranjan, Mr. Pritam Baruah, Mr. Sandeep Bhat etc. Some of the faculty recently recruited by NUJS is world class: think Mr. Sudhir Krishnasway (rhodes scholar), Mr. Shamnad Basheer (no need of introdcution) and MK Sinha (director of ISIL).Its natural for the # 23 to feel insecure about NALSAR. NUJS is rising rapidly. Its journal NUJS law review has been rated the best in India. The IDIA project shows NUJS social sensitiveness and the placements have been truly amazing with 150% placement expected this year. In the legal industry circles NUJS has already grabbed the no. 2 slot from NALSAR.". Nalsar Is Going Down,
- 25. ""In the legal industry circles NUJS has already grabbed the no. 2 slot from NALSAR". I second that.24, nice points. Moreover state reservations in NALSAR too don't augur well.". Second That,

"GLC doesnt give its placement details to all these legal news sites...plus all these sites seem to focus too much in NLU's. .I personally know GLCites who are in top UK,US Universities doing LLMs..and recruited in top tier firm. No offence to NLU's but you guys are too over rated having said that top 3-4 NLU's are still the best and they deserve all of it.". Unkn, Eneagu

"Whoa!...the only problem with glc is the fact that one cant confirm the rumours...newspapers say that glc doesn't have a permanent principal?!...so what authority are they looking up to?(..the vice principle can do very little being restricted or so i think)...the jodhpur turnout is surprising!...nalsar and bangalore are still on the 'top' because of reputation...how is faculty et al? Gandhinagar seems to grow each day...what about symbiosis? i'm a student and will give clat this year...all this is so confusing!!!what do i choose??this is bad! please dont mention universities/colleges out of loyalty!". Manika Gupta, Lucknow
- 47. "Its time that more contemporary law schools like the IIT Kharagpur LAW SCHOOL which syncronizes technology and law by admitting engineers only should come into prominence.". Rohit Jain, New Delhi
- 48. "Amarchand came to GLC just yesterday. Trilegal too has come for early placement, and will be taking interviews in GLC next week. Somehow, these never get reported. Khaitan signs on Articles from GLC, who get absorbed directly, so you'll never know statistically how many got in. Also, one must understand that the cream of GLC prefers signing their Articles with old Bombay firms like Mulla, Crawford Bayley, Wadia Ghandy, J.Sagar, Bharucha, etc. or they generally join the chambers of senior counsel in Bombay ". Aditya, Mumbai
- 49. "Well, this article may seem to suggest that the 4 aforementioned firms are expanding rapidly, going by the numbers they recruit. But these firms also have the highest attrition rate, which is why they HAVE TO recruit in wholesale. Maybe you should do an article on other big firms, more on the lines of their loyalty factor, etc.". Prasad, Mumbai
