The President has appointed the Chief Justices of the High Courts of Madras and Patna. The President has also appointed five Judges at the Calcutta High Court.
Justice M. Yusuf Eqbal who was till now the acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. He succeeds Justice H.L. Gokhale who has been elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Justice Rekha Manharlal Doshit has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court who was a Judge of the Gujarat High Court. Justice Doshit replaces Justice Dipak Mishra who recently took over as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
Tarun Kumar Gupta, Ragunath Bhattacharya, Asim Kumar Ray, Mrinal Kanti Chaudhuri and Kanchan Chakraborty were appointed as the Judges of the Calcutte High Court.
The Law Minister said “The Government has been reminding the Chief Justices of High Courts to initiate the process of filling up the vacancies of Judges,” he added, “Filling up of the vacancies is a continuous process as it keeps arising due to various reasons such as retirements, resignations and elevation of judges.”
The courts have millions of cases pending before them, this reflects the unresolved conflicts citizens live with everyday and puts vacancies in a perspective.
