Wipro Technologies, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) division has entered into a partnership with Microsoft Corporation to provide global Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) services for Microsoft’s Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio.
Wipro will integrate its BPO legal expertise with process and technology to reduce the overall legal costs of Microsoft's clients. It has been providing US patent and trademark filing services to Microsoft's IP and licensing group since July 2008, replacing the their in-house resources, outside law firms and offshore vendors.
Microsoft has already signed up with CPA Global and Integreon and during our conversation with Microsoft’s Assistant General Counsel, Marty Shivley had mentioned about increasing Microsoft’s outsourcing work to CPA Global and Wipro.
Most of the work Microsoft is outsourcing relate to patent and trademark, docketing and complex portfolio analysis. Microsoft has sometimes outsourced 100 percent of the work and in some cases outsourced portions that can be efficiently performed in India
Speaking to Bar & Bench, Saju A. Joseph, General Manager KPO & LPO solutions said “LPO deals will increasingly move for simple people substitution to larger integrated cost reduction deals. Service providers like Wipro are well placed to drive resultant value in the LPO space, working in close symbiotic partnership with clients”. Speaking to the media, Matrin Shively said "the dedicated Microsoft team at Wipro has become a fundamental component of our global Patent operations function. "The Wipro team works closely with our in-house team to manage one of the world’s largest and most valuable patent portfolios."

Bar & Bench also spoke to Saju Joseph on the deal details. A tight-lipped Saju Joseph cited “silent period” to avoid several details including revenue projects, staffing for the Microsoft project, areas covered under the outsourcing contract etc. What are the nuances of the Microsoft – Wipro Deal? Wipro has a prior engagement with Microsoft since 2000 where we have done infringement and invalidation studies. The relationship with Wipro has more than doubled in size with additional service lines being incorporated. Wipro believes that the market will move to overall cost reduction and efficiency generation driven by the marriage of domain, process and technology. This deal was designed to leverage those skills and experiences Wipro has had across the many other KPO and BPO engagements it delivers. Microsoft LCA department has been quite ahead of the industry in terms of a consolidation and efficiency strategy. Critical to the success of this delivery over the last two years has been its belief in process and method over ad hoc and subjective approaches. How long has Wipro been in the LPO business and who heads it? Wipro has been working for legal and contracting departments since 2000. The business has been termed as LPO since 2006. The LPO business comes under Ashutosh Vaidya – Head Wipro BPO. What is the growth plan of Wipro’s LPO unit? Wipro believes that the industry will see steady growth as value propositions are articulated better. Microsoft partners with Wipro on a variety of services but exact details are confidential as we are in silent period. |
