Showtime NLSIU showcasing budding film makers

The Law and Society Committee (Society) at NLSIU is conducting the second edition of their film festival – ‘When the Lights Went Out’. The festival, with youth affairs as the central theme, starts tomorrow and continues till May 30 at the Centre for Film and Drama on Millers Road in Bangalore..Showing that law is not all about the books, the Law and Society Committee (Society) at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU) is conducting the second edition of their film festival-‘When the Lights Went Out’. The festival, with youth affairs as the central theme, starts tomorrow and continues till May 30 at the Centre for Film and Drama on Millers Road in Bangalore..Tasneem Ravindra Deo, the Convenor of the Society, speaking to Bar & Bench said, “Films are a powerful tool in encouraging social awareness and bringing people together and also bridging the gap between law and society. This holds good for all kinds of art forms like street plays etc, but since films have a wider audience this would be a more effective method of getting our message across.”.The festival will screen the Francois Truffaut directed French classic, ‘400 Blows’ and the American, ‘Stand and Deliver’ which looks at education at an inner city school in Los Angeles. Speaking on the selection of movies, Tasneem said “The films are all varied and fit in nicely with our theme. You can call them angst ridden films, but at the same time we have made a conscious effort that these movies will be able to be viewed by a universal audience.”.One of the main attractions of the festival is the ‘Blank Reel’ event, a competition for amateur film makers. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges which includes the President of the Karnataka Film Academy, eminent director, T.S. Nagabharana..Gargi Chakrabarti, Researcherat the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights, Research and Advocacy, is scheduled to address the audience on protecting film-makers vis-a-vis Intellectual Property Laws..Coming as a breath of fresh air, different from the usual moots and seminars, Bar & Bench hopes that this event is a regular fixture on NLSIU’s event calendar.
