The results of the 2009 edition of India Business Law Journal’s Law Firm Awards are out. Based on a detailed survey conducted across more than 500 India-focused corporate counsel and business leaders in India and around the world, partners of about 200 Indian and international law firms and interviews and opinions of a large number of law firm clients in addition to recent deals, cases and professional achievements, as well as accomplishments related to practice development, such as office openings and prominent hires these awards are said to be one of the most coveted awards for law firms.

The popular ‘Law Firm of the Year’ award has been bagged by Luthra & Luthra for its bullish trend in 2009. Bharati Enterprises’ General Counsel Vijaya Sampat chose Luthra for their, ‘Quality of service, value addition and quick turnaround’. Consolidation, introduction of a lockstep, and big ticket transactions seem to have gotten Luthra the top award.

Heavyweight Amarchand Mangaldas, for the third year in a row, won the ‘Best Overall Law Firm’. Amarchand has won 12 awards in this edition of the law firm awards, more than any Indian law firm. Other winners in this category include AZB & Partners, J.Sagar Associates, Khaitan & Co., Luthra and Trilegal. Karam Daulet-Singh led Platinum Partners and Trilegal breakaway Phoenix Legal, have won the ‘Best Newcomers’ awards.

On the awards list include firms like Bhasin & Co., Gagrats, Desai & Diwanji, FoxMandal Little, Vaish Associates, Nishit Desai Associates and a host of other firms for the 19 categories, of which 16 categories are practice groups. There is no ranking awarded to the firms in each practice group/award category, and it is understood that the firms named in each category are similarly rated.
