Bombay High Court admits appeal against Shah Rukh Khan

Bad luck appears to have been dogging Shah Rukh Khan this week. He was detained early this morning at Newark Airport for two hours and released only after the Indian Embassy intervened. But the star's problems are not at an end. Earlier this week, the Bombay High Court admitted an appeal from the Income Tax Department regarding tax deduction claims against his earnings as brand ambassador for Omega Watches.

The case comes on appeal against the order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) allowing Khan to claim the deduction under Section 80RR of the Income Tax Act. The actor claimed that the 29 lakh fee paid to him by Omega watches for modeling their watches was in the "exercise of his profession" as provided under the relevant provision, and was therefore eligible for the deduction.

This is not Shah Rukh Khan's first brush with the Income Tax Departments. There is another appeal pending in the Bombay High Court under the same provision, regarding his income from another foreign company- Jeanne Arthes Perfumes.

Khan is being represented by Mr. S. S. Shetty and Mr. Hiro Rai in the High Court. When contacted, they confirmed that they were representing him in the High Court, but declined to comment since the matter was sub judice. The date for the next hearing has not been set.
