Eminent Jurist Vepa P Sarathi passes away

Bar & Bench News Network

Jan 25, 2012

The sad demise of eminent scholar Vepa P. Sarathi today morning at 4:30 AM has come as a shock to the legal community. He was 96 years old and he died a natural death.

He used to teach Criminal Law, Property Laws, Law of Evidence and Constitutional Law at National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad.

Speaking to Bar & Bench Prof. M. Sridhar Acharyulu, NALSAR’s Registrar said, “It is definitely a great loss for us. More than a Professor he was a friend, guide and philosopher to all of us over here. He was a classic author and a great orator. It is difficult to find a replacement for him. He could explain complex concepts in simple manner. In fact he was in love with NALSAR, that is the reason why he was teaching here even at the age of 96. Each and every faculty used to look forward to his guidance always”.

Prof. Vepa P. Sarathi, was enrolled as an Advocate in 1942 and later in 1976 he was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India. As a Member of the Law Commission under the Chairmanship of the retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice K. K. Mathew, Prof. Sarathi has richly contributed for the development of law especially in Consumer Law, Promissory Estoppel and Contract ‘d’adhesion (Adhesive Contracts).

Prof. Sarathi, as a Senior Advocate, had also appeared in the Bhopal Gas Leak Case on behalf of the Government of India as the Learned Attorney General’s Representative in the District Court at Bhopal and the High Court at Jabalpur. Prof. Sarathi was also Advocate General for Sikkim from January 1990 to October 1994 and from October 1994 to 31st December 1994; he served as the Chairman of the Sikkim Law Commission.

NALSAR honoured him in 2007 by awarding an honorary doctorate (LL.D) for his outstanding contributions to the field of Law.

Prof. Sarathi's death will be great loss to the legal fraternity.

  • 2. "What people don;t know that Prof. Vepa (he was called by this name by the students) was also an artist/painter. He took a break from work and spent few years in Paris to study art. His one liners/jokes during his classes were legendary and he was one of the few brilliant professors in Nalsar. Prof. Vepa RIP. ". Nalsar Alum, New Delhi
  • 3. "A personality beyond compare and a man whose humility was utterly unbelievable, especially since his knowledge of law was encyclopaedic and his oratory was a class act. A loss which will never be replaced, a man who will never bless NALSAR with his footsteps again, but his soul will always be there. A classic sense of humour, a man who could floor the ladies without even trying, and yes...who can ever remember that face without that omnipresent radiant smile! The most precious possession today for me is my Property Law book with his signature in it. A man never to be born again. Salute! ". Saurav, Delhi

He was just recovering from a fever and had a bad cough right then, but this didn't stop him from rummaging through a big pile of teaching notes to pull out some Shakespeare quote his wife happened to refer to, which he wanted to read to me immediately. I asked him if he was planning on teaching the next sem, referring of course to the fact that he was 94 running 95 then... much younger teachers have balked at having to deal with law school classrooms. But he drew closer with this confidential manner and said, "I have a bad cough, you see. But I think if it gets better in the next week or so, I should hopefully be able to take up a course next semester!" We'll miss you, so much, Vepa sir. That was probably more enthusiasm for the world at 96 than most people manage to have at 20. :-(". S. , Bangalore
  • 5. "Vepa was a great legal scholar. When I joined the SC bar in 1985, Vepa was a popular Sr Advocate with style of a old timer - pipe in his hand. May his soul rest in peace. ". Mohan Katarki, Delhi
  • 6. "A razor sharp mind, an elephantine memory, a fantastic sense of humour and a most remarkable, down to earth and kind man.It was an honour and a privilege to have known you. Rest In Peace.". Beyniaz Edulji, (Unknown City?) Secunderabad
  • 7. "Thank you, Bar and Bench for publishing this. @Mohan Katarki: Sir, for the benefit of Professor Vepa's students who were hitherto familiar only with Professor Vepa's academic brilliance, if you could tell us a little more about his litigating career (how well-respected he was, maybe a few anecdotes and so on), we would be grateful.". NALSAR Alumnus, New Delhi

To be honest, I was never a big fan of your website but with this single story, you have touched my soul. It goes to show that legal journalism goes beyond publishing news about deals, moots, law schools, law firms, courts and the usual ingredients of modern day Indian legal profession. At the end of the day, any profession is made my human beings and not institutions. And Vepa Sarathi was a contributor par excellence. So many generations of lawyers were blessed to have been taught by him, to have been fortunate to have a single conversation with him, and have definitely benefitted from his legal literature - his books on interpretation of statutes, law of evidence and property law being classics in their own right. Too bad he was not a "great jurist" or a "successful senior advocate" who would have made headlines in newspapers had they been no more. So to the entire Bar&Bench Team, respect for you. I am a fan now!". Fan, India

"Late Vepa Sarathy was the younger brother of my mother 98 yrs old.It is sad tonote that no one mentioned that he was the son of an eminent Judge who retired as acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court LATE SIR VEPA RAMESAM in 1935,AND Late Sarathy inherited and acquired all his knowledge from his late father.Sir Vepa Ramesam was not just an eminent Judge, but he was versatile in Astronomy,Mathematics and his general knowledge knew no bounds. He wrote books on Mathematics,Astronomy, and Andhra Chronology.,and he was always first in all the classes he studied and was showered with many a GOLD MEDAL.I wonder why none of the commentators wrote or mentioned about his father.I as the nephew of late Vepa Sarathy also admire his abilities,as I am the eldest of the nephews alive at 80 years.Any comment always mentions son of so and so,and here the so and so was more eminent than him,it is indeed very very sad and odd!".
