The Third All India Bar Examination (“AIBE”) was held on January 8, 2012 in 49 centers spread over 29 cities across the country.
The AIBE was held successfully in all the centers including the ones in Tamil Nadu where 2533 candidates appeared for the exam. Some of these candidates had been unable to take the AIBE in Chennai last year due to violent protests by law students. This year too, there were some protests at Coimbatore and 21 lawyers were arrested by the police, reports TOI. The third AIBE was conducted amidst tight security and over 200 police personnel were deployed at the exam centers, according to IBN.
Around 22,000 lawyers had enrolled for the third AIBE with 95% attendance across the country.
“The AIBE has now been successfully conducted across India, including in Tamil Nadu. This measure that was brought about to raise the standards of the profession is now entrenched in the legal profession and the large number of lawyers that have undertaken the AIBE since inceptions is proof of their faith in it. On behalf of the BCI and all the SBCs, I would like to congratulate every lawyer who has written the AIBE and wish them all the very best for the way forward. We are committed to supporting lawyers and the legal profession across India and will shortly announce further reform measures and steps to modernize the Indian legal profession” stated Mr. Ashok Parija, Chairman of the Bar Council of India in a press release.
According to the press release, the BCI expects to release the results before January 31, 2012 and shall post the same on its website.
It was interesting to see the large number of people of all ages waiting to enter the various centers across the country with two books filled with colorful post - its in their hands.
There were some candidates, who had registered with the Bar Council a decade back but wrote the exam just to test their skills.
It was also interesting to see the expressions of the candidates after the exam got over. Some of the candidates looked satisfied and happy while some looked dissatisfied.
Some candidates complained that the paper was lengthy and contained grammatical errors. Some candidates found that the exam was slightly tougher in comparison to the last two exams.
Bar & Bench spoke to candidates writing the exam from various centers across India and here is what they had to say

Mohan Roy (Bangalore, pictured left): The AIBE generally was a good experience. Everything was properly organised and everything went smoothly. The question paper was simple but still I could not manage to complete the paper in time. I have my doubts as to the correctness of few questions; because for some of the questions all options were correct. I did not understand the logic behind asking such questions.
Cyriac Tom (Bangalore, pictured right): The AIBE was neither too easy nor too tough for me but I could complete the paper in time.
Questions were framed in an interesting manner but some of the options given did not make any sense to me.
Murali Krishnan (Mumbai, pictured left): The AIBE this time around was not a cakewalk. If controlling the quality of the professionals entering the Bar is the object, the increasing standard of the exam is a step in the right direction. However, the organization and management of the whole process with respect to AIBE need drastic improvements.
Manjula R. S. (Cochin, pictured right): The AIBE was easy for me. With regard to the question paper, I had some issues. For some
questions all options were correct, for e.g.: When will culpable homicide amount to Murder? Four options were given and we were asked to choose the most accurate answer but the problem lies in the fact all four options were correct. So it’s seems like a blunder to ask these kind of questions. We can choose any answer we like. Similar questions were asked and we were to choose the least accurate answer. BCI needs to take very much care and caution when they draft questions in future. I felt any person with good logical reasoning could attend many of the questions not a law a graduate alone.
Suyash Singh (Delhi, pictured right): the Exam was slightly tricky and above the standard of basic level, but this way
the unwanted lawyers will get filtered out, the exam was over all good.
Chetan Razora (Delhi, pictured left): I thought three and a half hours would be more than sufficient to complete the exam, but I was wrong, it took me one and a half hour to solve the first 15 to 20 questions, so I decided to shut my book and answer the rest of the questions to save time and in fact just randomly answered the last few questions to finish within time.

January 9, 2012 - 6:35pmI attended AIBE in Bangalore, St.Annes Degree College for Women, where I found the examination was totally unorganized. People were discussing and creating disturbances in the class and the invigilators were just watching the whole scene. The candidates who were discussing and creating all the mess in the classroom were not at all considering the words of the invigilators and this was not an 'exam' for them ,but just another drama like what they found in their colleges. With regard to the questions it was up to the standard and a few questions were incorrect,as pointed out by my friends above.I felt the examination was not properly organized.

January 22, 2012 - 11:57pmIt was quite difficult exam compared to first 2 exams. I dont understand the reason of asking questions where 3 answers were right out of 5. e.g foreign judgment... res judicata question. The paper was no where near basic questions. It was very deep and confusing. Overall thumbs down to 3rd AIBE. BCI should consider very serioulsy about setting good paper for next exam. It was 30% easy and 70% difficult and vague also

January 31, 2012 - 11:27pmApparently the Calcutta High Court has stayed the publication of the results of the AIBE 2012 till disposal of the writ filed before it. Is it true? Does anyone know what is the progress in the case?

January 9, 2012 - 6:51pmI attended the exam in Thakur College of Engineering, mumbai and the scene was exactly as described by Greeshma above...it was poorly organised, the candidates were made to run between 1 room to the other in search of their seats as the seating arrangement was notified only in one place....three and a half hours was a very long period and even drinking water was not available in the hall...

January 9, 2012 - 6:50pmI was not aware of what happened in other class rooms. In my room both the inviligators were strict and did their duty in the best way. We were not even allowed to turn around. It's really sad to know that the situation as described by Greeshma happened in the same center. BCI or rainmaker , who ever is concerned should take up this matter seriously. I heard similar feedback from a candidate who attended in TN

January 9, 2012 - 10:59pmEven I have attended the exam in Thakur College of Engineering, Mumbai and the scene was ridiculous..the invigilators were not allowing us to open the question paper as the time was 11.40 suddenly one boy in our room started screaming at the invigilators as they were wasting time of the students and the time was 11.45 when I opened my Question Booklet..and even the worst part was that one of the invigilator was writing about the corrections made in the Question Booklet on board and was screaming in room to pay attention on the board and stop writing but those corrections were mere between "if" and "is"..frankly speaking I seriously started writing my paper at 12 p.m. Bar council should not only conduct exams but also look in what situation students are appearing for it..atlast I failed to complete my paper...RIDICULOUS..

January 10, 2012 - 3:11pmI attended the exam in St.Annes Degree College for Women, and I got really irritated with one invigilator in my room (Room 22) who was helping to copy candidates and reading out the answers. She continuously disturbed me from the beginning asking me irrelevant questions during exam (like from which State are you, Is the exam easy) and because of her I made mistake in marking and she gave me whitener & forced me to use it which was expressly prohibited. In the last half an hour she was persistently asking me to copy from the person sitting next to me inspite me telling 'No' continuously and waving her away with my hand...And I could not even read the last 10 answers and left 7 blank.... I hope that the BCI should give strict instructions to the invigilators as to how to conduct the exam. And I also started answering at 11.50... There should have been instructions to distribute the OMR sheets at 11.15 so that we could fill up the particulars and they could have very well given the question papers at 11.30

January 11, 2012 - 8:11pmI did the AIBE exam at St. Anne's Degree College for Women, Bangalore. In the first place the BCI and Examination Body of AIBE need to be commended for conducting the exam in a smooth and efficient manner. If one work's on a pro-rata basis, then the time one can spend one each answer is a maximum of two minutes. This is fair for normal questions. But in Part II of the exam, the questions were quite lengthy and the difference in the choice of answers were wafer thin. Each question therein took atleast 3 to 4 minutes to comprehend. The OMR sheets need atleast 15 minutes to be filled up and hence it is logical that they are distributed atleast 15 minutes before the exam. My personal opinion on the paper is that it required a lot of mental focus and hence was quite exhausting at the end. Needless to say, that this is the way forward, should India up its standards in the legal profession. :)
