Allen & Overy Senior Partners were recently in India on their annual visit to meet their clients and best friend Trilegal. Trilegal Partners had series of discussions with Allen & Overy Partne
10 partners India-dedicated and yet India-based Trilegal tie-up not even mentioned until a specific question about the firm was asked later in the interview? Good- atleast you fear and respect the Bar Council!
Dear A-there are firms who deliver same (and sometimes better and with partner level personal attention)quality. Further, resources (including human resources-good quality transactional lawyers are available in good numbers) can always be augmented if clients (or intl firms) patronage is there. There are examples (Trilegal itelf, what they are today and what they were before A&O)! It is only a matter of time for a firm to take leap from being mid/small size to a bigger size. The real question pertains to professionalism and open mindedness! You got the point?
Brando - you are right, but these large law firms have the resource and talent to carry on with big projects, which small or mid-size firms can't deliver with that much of quality.
I reiterate what I have said earlier-that to facilitate liberalisation of Indian legal sector, all international law firms should immediately stop referring any work to large family/individual owned Indian law firms. These Indian firms earn lot of money through this process and use the same money to lobby against liberalisation! Instead, the international firms should indentify newly set up small/medium law firms being managed professionally and nurture them and, then see the difference quickly!
Very very good interview. Good job BB.
