The Government has on Thursday accepted Solicitor-General Gopal Subramanium’s resignation. Subramanium had submitted his resignation on Saturday after the Centre decided to appoint Senior Advocate Rohinton Nariman instead of him in the Supreme Court in the 2G scam case.
The new Law Minister Salman Khurshid while taking charge had said that his top priority was to sort out the standoff between the Government and SG Gopal Subramanium over his resignation.
However, Khurshid told media that he would examine the matter but “a lot of water has already flown under the bridge”.
According to Hindu, the Government had taken serious view of his defiance, going against the advice of the former Law Minister, Veerappa Moily. The Government was also not happy with the fact that Subramanium visited President Pratibha Patil on the ground that it was against discipline and protocol to be followed by a senior law officer.
Subramanium told media that he had quit to uphold the dignity of the office of the Solicitor General.
Subramanium had also received flak from the Government about his handling of the 2G spectrum, Black money and the Salwa Judum cases.
Subramanium was appointed Solicitor-General in 2009 soon after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power. He is the also the Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI) since April 2010.
According to Indian Express, sources in the ministry said the government had already initiated the process of finalising the next SG. Among others, the name of Rohinton Nariman is under consideration for the post.
We tried to reach Gopal Subramanium at the time of going to the press but he was not reachable.
