The placement process for National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi has concluded, with 23 students being placed with law firms and corporates. The batch of 2011 consists of 58 students of which 44 opted to sit for placements. Out of the 23 students placed, 4 students have received Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs).

Five students have been selected for the LL.M programme at National University of Singapore (NUS) with four students confirming their admission; one student opted for a job with Vedanta and declined the NUS offer. One student each has confirmed their admission at Queen Mary University of Law, London and Duisenberg School of Finance, Amsterdam.

The placement process at NUALS was handled by the Committee for Campus Recruitment (CCR). The committee consisted of members of the graduating batch. The recruitment work began from June 2010 and continued till April 2011.

The CCR operated on a two-step process. The first step involved sending representatives of the CCR to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru in June 2010. These teams visited various law firms, corporates, LPOs and other organisations in these cities with a view to introduce NUALS and the batch and invited them to participate in the recruitment drive.

The second stage was the final recruitment process that commenced in August 2010. Interested organisations were required to register with the CCR to participate in the recruitment process. They were also required to disclose the terms and conditions of employment and compensation packages upon registration. After registration, the organisations were allotted a specific date and time slot.

Bar & Bench spoke to a member of the recruitment committee and two students who were pursuing their LL.M. This is what they had to say

Vishnu S. (Member CCR ), “Despite being a third tier national law school with all the limitations, we’ve managed to get a fair amount of placements. The recruiters gave us a positive response which resulted in them recruiting more students than they had planned. Also now with the permanent campus being opened from the next academic year (2011-12) I am positive my alma matter would create new standards in the legal fraternity.”

Munni Mary, (Confirmed Admission at Queen Mary University of Law) “ I’ve always wanted to surge into the pristine area of corporate law. Hopefully QMUL will be the beacon for the same”

Sindhu S T, (Confirmed Admission at National University of Singapore) “I first joined NUALS with the hope of getting placed in a corporate firm with a fat pay check. However, as I progressed through my course in NUALS, I had a change of mind. I think I can attribute this change of mind to the faculty of NUALS. I began to develop an interest towards learning, especially Maritime law. The faculty encouraged us to learn as much as we could, even after we graduate. I could say that now I have a place in the National University of Singapore for their LL.M (Maritime Law) programme because of their support.”

Recruitment statistics of NUALS are as follows:

  • 2. "NUALS has only 57% placements? I am surprised as it is a good college.". 57% Placements, (Unknown City?)
  • 3. "28 out of 47 students. That makes 57% placements! Utterly disappointing.Let us get deeper! 4 placed with senior counsels? Anyone can get placed with a senior counsel!Has anyone heard of Vichar Partners (1)? Or R & P Partners (3)? Firms like these must be paying peanusts, around 10 thousand rupees per month! It will be better to open a small stationery shop than study in NUALS.According to me 15 students have found placements, that can be really called placements. And these guys want to do LLMs in NLUs? Clearly shows that NUALS is not of the level of an NLU. Please strip NUALS of it's NLU status. Please.". 57% Placements! Is NUALS A National Law University?, (Unknown City?)
  • 4. "This is really disappointing!!57% placements?? that too for a national law school???should say.. many pvt. laws schools are way better than this in their placement statistics!!". Shame On NUALS, (Unknown City?)

  • 9. "@ no.3 hey! while admittedly 57% might not a good figure by your lofty standards it is quite presumptious to declare that firms you mentioned are unheard of just because your vision is limited to your nostrils. NUALS is a national University and while we may not have the intricate network of alumni that more often than not gets a lot of National Universities' Students into big firms and not necessarily quality.". Werdon, (Unknown City?)
  • 10. "I want to know how much Rangarajan and Prabhakaran pays? 5,000 thousand rupees per month? How much does vichar partner pay? These are low grade, low paying firms. My vision is restricted to nostrils; but you seem to be ignorantly blind!". Ignorantly Blind, (Unknown City?)
  • 11. "whys everyone commenting without names ? A little dissapoinment on how the placements is ok : )"Has anyone heard of Vichar Partners (1)? Or R & P Partners (3)? Firms like these must be paying peanusts, around 10 thousand rupees per mont" - this was totally unnecessary"NUALS is not of the level of an NLU. Please strip NUALS of it's NLU status. Please" - thats not for you to decide , nd btw who are you :) is placements the sole critieria ?? @ 10 - why are you so concerned with money ? in life the point is to be happy, for you may be moneys the most important thing this may not be so for others". Sharath, Cochin, NUALS
  • 12. "@no.3..your prejudice is evident..go get a life...whom are you pleading with to strip NUALS of its NLU status..and what are your credentials to sit in judgment over d standards of NLUs... @no.8...no. 7 comment is true..need to get you facts right..whats d harm in telling the truth to put NUALS in good light...it shows you are bent on "putting NUALS in bad light"...well said sharath..". Murali, Kochi
  • 13. "@no.3..ur prejudice is evident..what are your credentials to sit in judgment over standards of NLUs..go get a life..@no. 8..no. 7 comment is true..declaring dat d comment is "obviously false" shows ur malafide to "put NUALS in bad light"...". Murali, Kochi
  • 14. "So, thts how things are going.....Leme ask to ol those Unknown and ignorantly blind *******...... : Y r u ppl so bothered????!!!!.....n it seems like ol of u r disappointed wid the placement percentage......so u kno its a gud college....owryt....ultimately..its nt the amount of ppl getng placed that matters...grow up guys....name of an institution depends on smthn els....n u ppl will repend for ur comments sooner or later!!!". Sanand Menon NandKUMAR, KOCHI
  • 15. "Except perhaps for National Law School Banglaore which has the advantage of being the first law school in the country, all the other law schools in the country are pathetic. There are very few faculty members in these law schools who really know to teach and have sufficient research credentials. NUALS is no exception and it does not have good faculty. In kerala most consider it as nothing but an extension of KLA. Except for its Director who is an internationally recognized jurist, the rest of the faculty have nothing to boast of except perhaps the UGCNET which any aspirant for a bank clerk job with a little knowledge of law can clear easily. Getting admission for LLM in foreign universities is not anything big, and that too in NUS (An LLM from Bangalore or ILI will be much better) unless of course it is backed up by a generous scholarship. ". MR. Narayanannair , (Unknown City)
  • 16. "@no.3:-y r u so concerned about NUALS Mr.Judge????what is ur acadamic qualification???LKG-B or wat???grow up dude...between wher do u work??? its lame on u to pass such awful comments on other National Universities...........one final word 4 u.....as long as the NUALSians dont have a prob....there is no need to be so concerned abt their future!!!@Mr.Narayannair...again.... hav u passed UGCNET???? if not..ur frustation of not getting UGCNET is understandable but that shouldn't come out like this!!! ur words sound so ignorant!!!!!". Abhijith,
  • 17. "My first question is why the students are chasing for placements. Is it the criteria for identifying an institution good or bad? What is the purpose of education? Merely to serve the need of corporate who are interested to make money at any cost? Who is always absorbing good and able future lawyers and law profession is not a money making mechanism. it is true that the real power of an educational institution is its ability to impart education for which the potential of faculties have its own importance. For that the institution needs individuals who have a real passion for teaching. The qualities of a good academic and qualities of a good teacher are something different. A mere backing of academic qualifications will not serve the purpose for an institution where academic excellence is the prime objective. So selection process and the attitude of the institution towards prospective candidates got its significance.". Devdas, (Unknown City?)
  • 18. " NUALS is a national law school and will stay as the best always ...Grapes you cant reach will appear sour :P ...instead of maligning and throwing dirt on others try to make yourself better". SACHIN, Kochi
  • 19. "Say whatever narrowminded hypocrites... NUALS is a national law school and will stay as the best always ...Grapes you cant reach will appear sour :P ...instead of maligning and throwing dirt on others try to make yourself better". SACHIN, Kochi
  • 20. "QMUL is just a decent school. It wouldn't match the likes of Kings College London or University College London or LSE ( Oxbridge would be the first) as most London Magic circle firm's would prefer the latter three. ". Solicitor , Between London And Delhi
  • 21. "The NLU tag says everything, n its nt the placement that matters its the quality of education at any NLU. Law sector is fast emerging and in few years thier offers and placements will overtake IIMs.". Akshay Prakash, Lucknow, India
