The Convenor of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) issued an explanation clearing out all the confusion and ambiguity of the results. The results released on May 28, 2011 displayed the ranks of the students but did not show their relative performance. It only displayed what was known as ‘master rank’.

The format of CLAT is such that, approximately 20-50 students are tied at the same score. Thus the display of ‘unique rank’ becomes imperative on the result page. Apart from the master rank, the result page of each student on  May 28 also displayed (a) their marks out of 200; (b) section-wise break-up of marks; (c) Ranks of students belonging to the categories of Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST), Women, Persons with Disability (PWD), SC/ST (Women), PWD (Women) and NRI. It also displayed the rank achieved by the candidate in his respective state.

However, on May 30 the unique lists were put up on the CLAT website. This list applied the tie-breaker rule and showed the unique rank achieved by each candidate. In separate columns of the list apart from All India General Category, it again showed the respective category rank of each candidate, that is, rank in All India SC/ST Category, All India Women, All India SC/ST (Women), PWD, PWD (Women) and NRI.

The difference between the category rank list of May 28 and May 30 is that only the All India General ranks were not released on the former date. Since the majority of the test-takers belong to the general category, the results declared on May 28 were of no use.

CLAT has 11 All India Categories

  1. All India General- 22,622 students had applied under this category.
  2. All India Scheduled Caste(SC)
  3. All India Scheduled Tribe (ST)
  4. All India Persons with Disability (PWD)
  5. All India Women
  6. All India Scheduled Caste (Women)
  7. All India Scheduled Tribe (Women)
  8. All India Persons with Disability (Women)
  9. All India Scheduled Caste (Persons with Disability)
  10. All India Scheduled Tribe (Persons with Disability)
  11. NRI

Category No. 5 – 11 is only applicable to only few participating NLUs

With regard to the online counseling platform, only a select group of students can access it and the same will be decided on a broad cut-off. The list of these students will be displayed on the CLAT website and only they will be able to access the online counseling platform. Candidates should be informed that the online counseling platform will not deal with the state-wise quotas as the quotas differ in numbers from each university. The online counseling platform will be activated within the next 7-10 days.
