CLAT 2011 Update Around 24000 students appeared for the exam across 19 cities

The 4th Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) took place yesterday with approximately 24,000 students appearing for the exam for admission into 11 National Law Schools in the country. The exam was organized by the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS).

The 4th Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) took place yesterday with approximately 24,000 students appearing for the exam for admission into 11 National Law Schools in the country. The exam was organized by the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS).

Bar & Bench reached to one of the Bangalore exam centers, National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and spoke with the Vice Chancellor of the law school, Professor (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao.

Speaking with Bar & Bench on the exam, Prof. (Dr.) R. Venkata Rao said, “The exam focuses on quality legal education and CLAT ensures, selection of the best and survival of the fittest”. When asked about his views on the change in the composition of the paper from CLAT 2010 he replied, “The change in pattern from the previous exams can only be commented upon and understood by the candidates themselves”.

The National Law School saw a small protest outside its campus demanding reservation for the domicile of Karnataka. However, it did not affect the conduct and proceedings of the exam due to the tight security.

There was some disturbance seen at Hansraj College (one of the Delhi Centers). It was reported that distribution of the question paper was done in a disorderly manner which resulted in at least ten minutes being wasted after the exam had started. Bhavna Bhasin, one of the candidates reported, “We later found out that the invigilator was an office peon or a clerk. He had wrongly distributed the different sets of the paper and then it took at least ten minutes to sort out the mess-up. We were not even given a time-extension which even worsens the whole situation as the paper was extremely lengthy”.

CLAT 2011 comprised of 200 questions for 200 marks. The paper was divided into 5 sections. English section (40 marks) was a surprise as it tested students only from comprehensions and not vocabulary or grammar whereas Maths (20 marks) saw a majority of questions from probability. Current Affairs (50 marks) was fairly diverse with questions based on committees/commissions on the higher side, however level of questioning was moderate. Logical Reasoning (45 marks) comprised of topics such as assertion-reason-example and alphabet series. Legal Aptitude/Awareness (45 marks) had questions based on a pattern where students had to infer a conclusion based on a given set of facts and principle.

The general consensus among the students was that the paper was extremely lengthy however the views of the candidates differed on section of the paper which made it lengthier.

Speaking to Bar and Bench Rajneesh Singh, Product Manager (National) for the law course at IMS Learning Resources Pvt LTD said “Majority of the students are shattered and deeply frustrated by giving a paper which they were not mentally prepared for. It was not the questions which surprised them. It was the paucity of time which surprised them. For the first time in CLAT students were under severe time constraint, this made them to panic in the exam hall”.

Candidates Response:

Nikhil, Clarence High School, Bangalore said, “Long paper, different from the previous year papers, however sticked to the course outline/syllabus”.

Amit, St. Aloysius, Mangalore, “English Section took most of the time. The paper was extremely lengthy however organized well”.

Avantika, G.D Goenka Public School, Delhi “The questions asked and the paper was easy except it was extremely long. Maths was difficult for me but Current Affairs went fairly well”.

Nishanth, School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore “Legal Aptitude section was long. Too many principles instead of one. Time Management was a big problem although Current Affairs was easy”.

Aathira, Kendriya Vidyala, Malleswaram Bangalore “Standard of questions was difficult and due to the length couldn’t complete on time”.

Shiva, Bishop Cotton’s, Bangalore “The paper went fine, however confusing till one point.Time-Management became challenging up till the end”.

The results will be announced on May 28. This year, the centralised admission process will be held at the WBNUJS.

Law is a life long mental torture young man. So CLAT was right. And why do you think it tested LUCK? Because you were incapable and not just INTELLIGENT enough to do this year's TOUGH and LENGTHY CLAT?

Ok ...This paper OBVIOUSLY tested the intelligence of the candidate. They want the best lot out of the 23,000...The paper was no doubt lengthy .But that was the punch .Majority of the people could only attempt 170 questions with accuracy ..And there the intelligence comes into play ..Those ppl who who attempted the questions with accuracy will make it ..English :Was fairly Easy (Too lengthy ,Most of the students could attempt only 2 passages Gk : It was moderate .There were few abrupt questions But a score of 35 would be competitiveMaths :It was easy .But TIME TAKING ..Logical :Quite Easy (only thing required was practice)Legal : Well made Section ,Quite unique (Love solving it )Overall the questions were moderate,Time Constraint has made CLAT 2011 DIFFICULT ..

according to me..the full form of clat shud not be common law admission test..bt shud be "COMMON *LUCK* APTITUDE TEST"!! on an average 40 quests wre guess work n the bengalis wre simple testing the luck ..coz on one no. there r 100 f students and even 3-4 marks wud make a big diff so best of LUCK !! coz this IS common LUCK aptitude test i guess lottery wud hv been a btrr option to admit the students so tat at least 2 hrs f torture wud nt hv been suffered by all the students who gave CLAT !!

Wow! I'm appalled by the sheer idiocy of so many people praising the paper for its 'innovativeness' and making retarded statements like 'it was long for everyone, so it makes no difference'. Let me illustrate how the paper will make room for luck factor by a significant margin: 2 students, one well prepared, and the other, not so much. They both are almost out of time and thus, randomly mark 25 answers in their OMR sheets, without reading the questions, like almost everyone did. Despite being smarter and better prepared, the second student may just make it to a law school and the former wouldn't, coz the latter had more lucky guesses. I'm not criticizing this paper, saying it was too tough or challenging, etc. etc. Competitive exams are supposed to be that way. My point is that the paper was engineered incorrectly, as far as stipulated time for completion is concerned. With close to every student randomly marking 10-40 questions, without reading questions (I know people from both ends of the spectrum), it creates a significant space for luck to kick in, completely defeating the purpose of having only the best qualify. People may qualify just by virtue of lucky guesses, while worthy students, whom luck didn't favour, are left with nothing. The other problem is the fact that each time, the format sees a change. If the goal is to test everyone on a level playing field, its prudent to have a proper, recurring format. It sets a precedent, based on which people can prepare for the test. It brings a constancy in the preparation of students and leaves space for individual intellect and understanding. If two people have prepared based on a similar test format, obviously the one who has worked harder and is genuinely smarter will make it.

Fantastic CLAT

May 21, 2011 - 4:58pm

The CLAT was tough and lengthy. NO LUCK was involved. If I am INTELLIGENT I'd have attempted 180 questions. If I am DUMB I'd have attempted 160 questions. So only intelligent and smart students will score well!

i had prepared for just 3 days for the clat exam.did some logical questions, read events 2010,practiced some legal aptitude questions.i was quite surprised to see the way students prepared for the exams.bt i was even mre surprised to see, there wasnt too much difference between me and them, after the exam.everyone answered many qstns in random and the luck factor definitely creeps in it.i havent attended any qstns in maths section in a gud way,bt jst bubbled all the D's.english was so lengthy, most of the candidates cudnt finish it or many resort to guess work.whereas current affairs was the easiest one.u cant call it innovative, except for the legal aptitude qstns, which was worth lingering after the exam.

if one had brains he wud have understood the nature of the paper in the very first 10 minutes by moving thru the entire paper for taking a look into all 5 sections.... now for the ones shouting their heads off about lengthy paper and LUCK factor dominating should have kept their heads cool during the exam and shud have PLANNED and STRATERGISED ... first attempt those questions which were faster to solve and wud gurantee u ur marks ... now if u get freaked up and do not STRATERGISE AND START attempting the ever so lengthy english section first u will lose out.. FRIENDS ITS NOT ABOUT TAKING COACHING ONLY IF U HAVE A COOL DHONI MIND , THE LUCK FACTOR WILL NOT DOMINATE AT ALL.

There is only one word to describe CLAT 2011: Frustating. Competitive exams are supposed to test ones aptitude and skill but they are also supposed to give a fair chance to everybody who took the time and effort in preparing for it. If you want to change the format because you think coaching-clones are taking advantage, fine. Change the format but at least inform the people who have been working their asses off for two years or more. Constancy in the format enables one- whether self studying or taking coaching- to prepare better. You can make the questions tougher or trickier, but at least don't change the format of the paper to unrecognizable proportions. If you want to pick the smartest, make it as tough as IIT JEE. But at least give everyone a fair shot at it.

An overly lengthy paper defeats its own purpose. Raunaq has elucidated very well on this topic; almost everyone would have marked several questions in a random manner without reading the questions due to time constraints. Someone with luckier guesses, regardless of his preparation, would have an advantage over a better-prepared candidate who wasn't quite so fortunate with his guesswork.I found the English part very easy, logical reasoning and general knowledge somewhat easy, legal aptitude rather long, and as for math, I simply guessed over half the answers because there wasn't enough time left. Though whatever I attempted was laughably easy.I hope this works out. Waiting eagerly for 6pm, 28th May.

Sheesh! I kind of regret reading the comments(not the article)since I'm appearing for CLAT 2012(which happens to be less than 2 weeks away) and NOW I'm seriously doubting my preparation. If I don't get into a notable National Law university, then it's 'Ciao' to Law. Yup! I'll be stuck forever in Engineering(Science student...you got that right T.T) since I really, really can't afford to take a year off. Why is everyone freaking out so much anyway? Smh. *Sigh* It's freaking me out as well. I really do hope that this year's paper is do-able(I've always had to deal with time-constraint.I just can't seem to complete it on time, no matter what I do! -_-')Either way, wish me Luck 'cuz if this year's paper is anything like the previous year's, then I'll be needing a LOT of it! (No exaggeration)

A level playing...

4: ARE YOU STUPID?If it was lengthy, its lengthy for all! The paper was TOUGH, INNOVATIVE and LENGTHY. That is how every national level COMPETITIVE EXAM should be.---The exam was to test the 'INTELLIGENCE' and 'APTITUDE' to study law. You can increase your intelligence or develop 'aptitude' by preparation. Also, coaching requires money and cannot be afforded by POOR STUDENTS. So the test was intentionally designed to make sure that coaching or no coaching doesn't make a difference in the scores a candidate gets.If he/she is INTELLIGENT and has a APTITUDE for law, he'd have done well! Those 5 QUESTIONS WERE A BLUNDER THOUGH. They'll be taken care of! Don't worry!

They neither tested our intelligence nor our memorizing capability ....it was only LUCK that was tested yesterday apart from our patience to endure a 2 hour mental torture ! It was most unfortunate for the people who were writing Clat for the last time .For the people who left no stone unturned while preparing for this exam, keeping everything at stake and giving all that they could to...JUST CLAT!
