A Bench of Chief Justice M. Yusuf Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam heard the foreign law firms’ case today at the Madras High Court and have adjourned the case to August 2, 2011.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Advocate General of Tamilnadu P.S. Raman appeared on behalf of the foreign law firms and the Bar Council of India (BCI) respectively.
A request was put up by the Advocate General P.S. Raman to postpone the case as the BCI is in the process of drafting a proposal to address the issue of foreign law firms.
The Bench thus postponed the matter to August 2, i.e. after the summer vacations of the High Court.
Speaking with Bar & Bench, Gopal Sankarnarayanan from the BCI confirmed and said, “There is a draft proposal which was discussed over the weekend (April 16-17) addressing the issue of foreign law firms, but the minutes still need to be signed off”.
The foreign law firm’s case was filed by Petitioner A.K. Balaji and was last heard on January 24, 2011. The 31 foreign law firm’s case was adjourned twice last year after being heard on August 19, 2010. It was listed for hearing on October 5, 2010 and November 24, 2010. This year it has been listed three times already on January 24, March 8 and April 19.
